A native of Colorado, Nancy Oswald spent twelve years in the back country of British Columbia where the seeds for the book Cariboo Heart germinated. The story grew from interviews, diaries, and other primary sources that reflected life in the remote area of Empire Valley at the onset of World War I. During her time in British Columbia, the author taught in both a one room school and a two room school, and taught literacy to Native adults. Of the book, Cariboo Heart, the author says, “It is close to my heart because of my own experiences living in an area that is still considered remote by modern standards.”

The author currently lives on a family ranch in rural Colorado with her husband and 15 year old son. She continues to write, helps with the ranch, and teaches fifth grade in a neighboring school.
