Philip José Farmer was born in 1918 in North Terre Haute, Indiana. Shortly after receiving his BA in English from Bradley University in 1950, Farmer published his first novella, The Lovers, for which he was awarded a Hugo Award for Most Promising New Author. He has taken many chances with his writing, and is known in the science fiction world for creating quality works often filled with graphic and provocative imagery. Over the years he has continued to earn awards for his science fiction, including a Hugo Award for Best Novella for Riders of the Purple Wage in 1968 and a Hugo for Best Novel for To Your Scattered Bodies Go in 1972. He was named the 2001 Grand Master at the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America’s prestigious Nebula Awards.
