Hands Up Or, Twenty Years of Detective Life in the Mountains and on the Plains
by General David J. Cook

Hands Up by General David J. Cook

A grisly and entertaining account of the experiences of General David J. Cook, Superintendent of the Rocky Mountain Detective Association. This sensationalist narrative (written or dictated by Cook but presented in the third person) takes the reader through the true history of crime in the Colorado area during the 1860's and 70's. The times were hard and the men desperate, and there was almost no law enforcement to speak of. The few brave souls who did try to battle crime saw such scenes of butchery as cannot be spoken of without a shudder.

A gory and hair-raising account of the sensational events witnessed by General Cook in 19th-century Colorado, Hands Up is unique among wild west narratives. General Cook was the founder of the Rocky Mountain Detective Association, a secret organization of law enforcement officials that battled crime in a mostly lawless land. Therefore his story focuses not on fighting Indians or hunting buffalo, but on the criminal history of the west. In this book we learn of all the heinous crimes committed by the daring and often desperate men who settled the frontier. This ghost-written account reveals General Cook to be an exceptional specimen of manhood, who "has put in twenty years...ever mindful of the public welfare and forgetful of his own comfort and quiet; ever anxious to bring the guilty to punishment and to free the country of the human vultures who prey upon it." Cook was involved in solving many a mystery, and the book's bloody descriptions are often hard to handle, as when we witness the final twitching death-throes of a criminal on the gallows, or the famous case of 'The Italian Murders': "I was still playing on the harp, but the sight of the dead bodies and the blood running on the floor made me sick. Filomeno made me lick his knife and ordered me to drink some of the blood. He scraped up a handful of blood running from the boy's throat and drank it, the others doing likewise as a pledge of fidelity. They then threw the bodies into the cellar..." and it gets worse. While some of the events described in Hands Up involve robbery and other crimes, they always end up in murder and mayhem, so the author has plenty of chances to exercise his virtuosity in carnage. What may be lacking in literary style is more than made up for in enthusiasm. Hands Up possesses all the auto-accident charm of a modern thriller. Not only is it terribly entertaining, but you're learning history too. "Certainly we feel that the stories as here given explain themselves; and we believe that the reader will agree with the writer, after perusing the volume from beginning to end, that he has gotten the worth of his money." You certainly will get plenty of thrills for your buck when you read Hands Up!
