The Ingenious Mr Bell Pioneer of Steam Navigation

The Ingenious Mr Bell by Brian D Osborne
A Life of Henry Bell (1767 1830) Pioneer of Steam Navigation
Henry Bell (1767 1830) was the pioneer of steamship navigation. His famous
Comet steamship successfully sailed upstream from Greenock in 1811. This is
the first proper biography of the man who introduced the steamship into
practical commercial service.
Responsible in large measure for the Clyde becoming one of the shipbuilding
centres of the world, and the man who opened up the Scottish Highlands and
Islands to steam navigation, Bellšs achievements have been largely ignored.
In a comprehensive, accurately researched and most of all readable account
of his life, The Ingenious Mr Bell puts this right. Brian Osborne points to reasons for Bellšs lack of recognition in his own land. As an entrepreneur and doer, Bellšs experience and important contributions to technological
and economic development have much relevance in modern day Britain.
Brian Osborne is from Bellšs adopted home town of Helensburgh. Formerly a librarian he is a writer whose wide range of interests include the shipbuilder Robert Napier and the novelist Neil Munro.
