Forced to wear constricting and painful feminine clothing, the students, both male and female, were publicly flogged on their exposed buttocks for the slightest infraction, and often for no reason at all. But the pupils devised a reasonably satisfactory means of soothing their punished comrades late at night as they supposedly slept in their dormitories. Alice became so accustomed to his new name that he almost failed to realize, at the end of the tale, that he was being hastily summoned in near panic when a staff member addressed him as Jimmy. Ah, revenge can be so sweet.
