The Provost is an ironic look at the career of a small town merchant and politician. Set in Irvine, in Ayrshire, it follows the life of James Pawkie, the Provost of the title.
From his humble apprenticeship he progresses to owning his own shop, and eventually a large part of his home town. Simultaneously he becomes involved in local politics, and, starting with a seat on the town council he rises to be the Provost, the supreme position of local power, allowing him to manipulate everyone connected with the politics of the town to serve his own interests.
Superficially a work of comedy, but with serious overtones, The Provost is widely regarded as Galt's masterpiece.
