Talking Books Children's Authors Talk About the Craft, Creativity and Process of Writing
by James Carter
Talking Books by James Carter
''There are just a few questions that are commonly asked of children''s authors, and clearly, there are no singular or definitive responses. Essentially, what Talking Books sets out to do is to show how some of our children''s authors respond to there and many other similar questions. The authors featured in Talking Books are: Neil Ardley, Ian Beck, Helen Cresswell, Gillian Cross, Terry Deary, Berlie Doherty, Brian Moses, Alan Durant, Philip Pullman, Celia Rees, Norman Silver, Jacqueline Wilson and Benjamin Zephaniah. Talking Books is a collection of monologues - reworked transcripts from in-depth interviews with some of the most important and influential of contemporary children''s writers. Much is known and spoken of the product that is the children''s book, but it is rare that writers are given the opportunity to talk at length about the process of writing for children. So, to redress this situation, Talking Books presents a wide selection of authors reflecting upon the joys and challenges, rewards and demands of the craft, creativity and process of writing for children. After a general introduction, each monologue is divided into individual sections, in which the writer talks about: *their reading habits as children and adults *how they came to be published *how they approach their writing on a daily basis *how they view the writing process *the evolution of their titles - either books or poems *how they perceive their visits to schools, *and finally, in a `specialist subject'' section, the authors explore an issue of interest related to their work. James Carter is a freelance teacher and writer. He teaches Creative Writing and Children''s Literature on the BA.ED degree at Reading University, where he recently completed an MA in Children''s Literature. His published work includes poetry for the Primary age range.
