Zim A Baseball Life
by Don Zimmer
Zim by Don Zimmer
Don Zimmer's baseball life crossed paths with some of the game's most
memorable people and events -- from Babe Ruth and Jackie Robinson to
Roger Clemens and Joe Torre -- from "Dem Bums" in the '50s to the 2000
Subway Series -- from Pee Wee Reese to Derek Jeter: this is the story of
Zim's remarkable journey through baseball.
Don Zimmer's baseball life crossed paths with some of the game's most memorable people and events. His American Legion national championship team received congratulations from Babe Ruth, a year before the Bambino passed away. He played alongside Jackie Robinson on Brooklyn's only world championship team in 1955, and was in the losing dugout for Bucky Dent's playoff-winning homer in 1978. Zimmer played for Casey Stengel as an original New York Met in 1962, managed the Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs, and was on the bench for the Yankees' world championships in 1996, '98, '99, and 2000.
Zimmer will take you everywhere he's been over his 53 years in the game. He relates his comeback from a near-fatal beaning in the minor leagues; his adventures with "Dem Bums" in the '50s -- on the field and at the horse track; and the real stories behind Joe Torre's Yankees, including the 2000 Subway Series and the Roger Clemens-Mike Piazza bat-throwing incident.
Zimmer's career in baseball included stops in Alabama, Minnesota, Indiana, Cincinnati, Puerto Rico, Florida, Japan, San Francisco, Montreal, Colorado, and Utah, among other places. From Stengel to Torre, from Pee Wee Reese to Derek Jeter, this is the story of Zim's remarkable journey through baseball.
