In my early twenties, I came across some psychology books that explained how my mind, emotions and body were all tied together, and that they acted in unison. These books offered me ways to detect and unlearn counter-productive emotional and mental habits.
Later, while living in Asia, I studied Oriental cultures and philosophies, earning a Master’s Degree in Asian Studies. I learned a mental exercise called “Hung-Saw” meditation which taught me to relax and stop worrying.
In one of those lucky twists of fate that life sometimes throws at us when things look bleak, I came into a life-changing situation. After I decided how to settle a long-standing problem with my marriage, the joy of living that I had felt as a very young child returned, along with an unusually clear mind. I experienced six months of feeling really, really good --- literally Heaven- on-Earth. I felt that one day feeling that good was worth every unhappy thing I'd ever been through, just because it contributed to my reaching such a wonderful place. I felt invulnerable to any tragedy, because I knew my natural emotions could deal with anything and I’d come out happy. I learned clearly that happiness comes from inside. I learned several things that we’ve all heard as clichés and really don’t believe, such as “There’s good in everything.”
Happiness is given to each of us at birth. Everything is new, exciting, and wonderful to us. Throughout our lives, everything we do, we do believing we will feel better for it. Once we understand that outside circumstances needn’t change for us to be happy, we are truly self-empowered.
