Interview with Christer Holloman

If you could give just one piece of advice to a business about their social media campaign, what would that be?

Be absolutely clear up front about what targets you are planning to achieve with your social media campaign and don't roll out until you have found a satisfactory way to track the results.

What do you think of Google+ so far?

I think we are yet to see the full potential of Google+ realised. Everyone is talking about Google+ being another SEO tool for your website, which is great, but personally I'm most excited about getting to use it at work. I think Google+ will be a great collaboration platform.

Name a book that you'd be embarrassed to be seen reading.

Getting Things Done by David Allen, afraid people would think I'm procrastinating.

Did you ever read a book and then wish you had all that time back?

The Secret by Rhonda Byrne, the main point can be summarised in one sentence, 'it's better to think positive then negative'  which is fine. The rest is just like an advert for a religious cult with a bit too much self promotion of a set of random 'spiritual leaders' and other job titles I had never heard of before.

What type of books do you like to read in your spare time?

Self help and other educational text books, something that can improve specific areas of interest in my life. Right now I'm reading the British Horse Riding Society Complete Training Manual for Stage 1 as I'm working on improving my riding skills.

If you had a book club, what would it be reading and why?

We would be reading the best business books and double up as networking forum for likeminded individuals.

What is the greatest challenge that you feel businesses face with social media?

Finding the balance of just getting on with it and involving more departments outside marketing. Social Media has traditionally been owned by the marketing department but to make the most of social media it should be used by more functions like sales, customer service and product development but the more people you involve the longer everything takes.

Are you working on any new books now?

I've started researching a book that will be about intrapreneurship, what's best practise around the world for creating a culture of entrepreneurship within established businesses.  I've already interviewed senior representatives from companies like Intel, Google and Tata Group (owner of brands like Jaguar and many more).

Do you believe it is important for authors to have a strong online presence?

Yes because we live in a Google world. When I need an answer, be that what movie to watch this weekend, how to spell a specific word or compare which motorbike I want to buy, 9 out of 10 times it starts with a Google search. You need to appear in Google searches if you want to be discovered.

If you could choose one superhero power, what would it be and why?

Omnipresence, so I can be in the office getting work done while at the same time doing that 2 week road trip along the French atlantic coast I keep putting off.
