ACT ONE:
INT. MATT AND MELODY’S BEDROOM - MORNING
FADE IN:
The bedroom is small and poorly taken care of. It looks like it hasn’t been cleaned in weeks.
AROUND THE ROOM:
Empty beer cans on the dressers and night stand
Dirty clothes scattered everywhere, some even hanging from the ceiling fan
ALARM BUZZES
A HAND reaches from underneath the covers and scrambles around to turn it off. MATT HOLLOWAY(22), who looks almost sick slowly gets up and rubs his bloodshot eyes and pale face. He looks at the CLOCK.
TIME: 9:30 a.m.
Matt looks to the BODY under the covers and forces a smile. He fights to stand up.
INTERCUT:
INT. HALLWAY/BATHROOM - CONTINUOUS
Matt slowly walks out of the bedroom. He looks very weak and can barely keep his eyes open. He yawns and rubs his eyes as he trips on a SMALL TOY CAR.
MATT (Quietly)
Son of a bitch!
Matt walks into the bathroom, closes and LOCKS the door. He walks to the mirror and stares at himself for a moment. He splashes some water on his face.
A look of shame comes over him. He looks on the counter and sees an OPENED PREGNANCY TEST KIT. Matt looks up at the ceiling and lets out a long sigh.
MATT (CONT’D) (To self)
Shit...
Matt reaches under the sink. He grabs a CARRYING CASE taped to the top of the cabinet and puts it on the counter. He opens the case to find a few SYRINGES with DARK BROWN STAINS inside the TUBES. Also in the case is a SPOON with burn marks, a LIGHTER and a MEDICINE BOTTLE.
Matt opens the bottle and pulls out a BAG with a piece of BLACK TAR HEROIN. Matt smiles; he’s happy to see it.
PREPARATION SEQUENCE TO FOLLOW
Matt sits down on the toilet. He pushes the needle into his VEIN.
MATT (CONT’D) (Overly satisfied)
Ah, finally.
After a moment, Matt’s paleness goes away and an euphoric feeling overcomes him; he begins to nod off.
MUFFLED SOUNDS come from the other side of the bathroom door that slowly progress to become audible.
WOMAN (O.S.) (Behind door)
Matt, hurry up. You’ve been in there for fifteen minutes. Derek has to use to the bathroom.
Matt doesn’t respond; he’s out of it.
WOMAN (O.S.) (CONT’D) (Behind door)
Matt? Damn it, hurry the hell up! (Pounds on door)
COME on!
MATT (Comes to)
Okay, okay. Calm down, I’ll be right out.
Matt realizes where he is, stands up and gets his stuff together on the counter. He starts to put the things away and goes to put the rest of the heroin back in the bag.
WOMAN (O.S.) (Pounds on door)
Matt! Hurry up!
Startled by this, Matt drops the heroin down the drain. He quickly tries to grab at it.

MATT (Desperately)
No, no, no! (Screams)
DAMN IT!
Rage engulfs Matt as he opens the bathroom door to MELODY ROSE(20) standing there with her son DEREK HARRIS(3)
MELODY
Thank you.
(To Derek)
Go on honey.
Matt starts to walk past her. He’s about to go off, but contain’s his rage. He looks down to Derek.
MATT (Kneels down)
Hey buddy I was busy in there, you couldn’t hold it any longer? And by the way, pick up your toys; I almost killed myself tripping over one of them.
Derek nods in agreement and goes into the bathroom.
MELODY (Interested)
What were you doing in there for so long?
Matt starts to walk back to the bedroom.
MATT
I was getting ready for work, what
else.
Melody shakes her head. She follows Matt back into the bedroom and they both sit down on the bed side. Melody lays back onto the bed. Derek comes to the doorway.
DEREK
Okay mommy, I’m done.
MELODY
Did you wash your hands?
Derek nods.
Finally- (Beat)

MELODY (CONT’D)
Okay, go and lay back down for a
while until Auntie Karen gets here. Derek starts to walk away.
MATT
Hey, no hug or what?
Derek runs back in and hugs Matt, who kisses Derek on the head.
MATT (CONT’D) Alright, now do as your mother
tells you.
Derek runs out of the room. Matt starts to zone out.
MELODY (Beat)
Can I get a kiss or what? Matt snaps out of it and smiles.
MATT Of course.
Matt leans over and gives Melody a passionate kiss.
MELODY
What’s the matter with you?
MATT Nothing.
(Beat) I’m fine.
MELODY
I know you, you’re not fine. Do you
want to talk about it?
MATT Talk about what?
(Beat)
Melody leans up next to Matt.
MELODY You know what.
Matt scratches his face and notices the time. TIME: 9:48 a.m.

MATT
Shit, I’m late for work. I have to
go.
(Gets up)
We’ll talk later.
Matt leans in and gives Melody another kiss.
MATT (CONT’D) I love you.
MELODY I love you too.
Matt starts out of the bedroom.
MELODY (CONT’D)
Oh, don’t forget you need to pick
Derek up from day care today, okay?
MATT (O.S.) You got it.
INT. LOCAL FAST FOOD RESTAURANT - FIFTEEN MINUTES LATER
Matt hurries into work and is met by NELSON(34), Matt’s boss. Matt looks at the clock behind Nelson and sees that he is five minutes late.
MATT
Nelson, I’m sorry for being late. I
promise it won’t happen again. (Starts to walk)
Women, let me tell you. Ya know? (laughs)
Matt looks back at Nelson, who keeps a straight face.
NELSON (Serious tone)
Matt, let’s have a seat. (Points to a nearby booth)
The two walk over and sit down.
MATT (Nervously)
What’s going on, Nelson?

Nelson sighs and leans in toward Matt.
NELSON (Quietly)
Matt, I’m going to ask you a question, okay? And I want you to be honest with me, please.
MATT (Nods)
Of course, you know I’m always truthful with you.
NELSON Well, about twenty missing last night was over. That was
right?
MATT (Shocked)
dollars went after the shift your shift,
What? Yeah, I was on register all night.
(Beat)
Twenty dollars, really?
Nelson looks disappointed.
NELSON (Sighs)
Yes Matt, twenty dollars. Did you take the twenty dollars from the register?
Matt becomes upset.
MATT
(Voice grows louder)
WHAT? Are you serious? I’ve been working here for over a year. I wouldn’t risk losing my job by stealing twenty measly dollars from you.
NELSON
There’s proof, Matt. I have you on
video. Also, some of the workers tell me you take frequent bathroom breaks and you’re in there for twenty minutes at a time.
Matt becomes uneasy.

NELSON (CONT’D) (Sincere)
Matt, I know your a good guy. I suggest you get help.
MATT Wait-your not-
(Beat)
What’s going on here?
Nelson leans back in the booth.
NELSON
Matt, if you would have been honest
with me, maybe things would have been different, but I’m sorry.
(Beat) You’re fired.
Matt begins to breathe heavily.
MATT (Louder)
No, no. NO! I need this job Nelson, please. I need this money.
NELSON Quiet down.
(Looks around)
Matt, I’m not going to let you work here and steal more money from me and spend your money on drugs. You have a girlfriend with a son man, get your life together.
Nelson stands up. Matt grabs Nelson by the wrist.
MATT (Pleading)
No, Nelson, you don’t understand. I need this job. I’ll get clean, I promise.
Nelson looks to Matt. He feels sorry for him.
NELSON
I’m sorry Matt, there’s nothing
else I can do. Your last check will be ready for you to pick up in two to three days.
Enraged by this, Matt stands up and turns to Nelson.

MATT (Desperate)
Whoa, wait, what? THREE DAYS!? I need that money NOW!
AROUND THE RESTAURANT:
Customers looks over with scared looks on their faces Coworkers watch from behind the counter in disgust
NELSON
I’m sorry Matt, there’s nothing I
can do. You’re going to have to wait.
VOICE (O.S.)
Is there a problem, Nelson?
Matt turns to see Vince(25), a at the restaurant.
NELSON
No Vince, go back to
Vince gives Matt a dirty look.
MATT (To Vince)

Matt looks at all of his coworkers. Matt becomes embarrassed, so he quickly leaves.

INT. MATT’S CAR - MOMENTS LATER
Matt drives down the road. He pulls over to the side and starts to hit the steering wheel, screaming as he does so.
MATT (To Self)
Screw it. I’ll go to Jude’s.
INT. JUDE KELLECK’S APARTMENT - LIVING ROOM - MOMENTS LATER
MATT sits on a couch, watching TV. The TV set is very nice and expensive looking. So is most of the rest of the furniture. It’s very clean as well.
JUDE (O.S.) Want a beer?
Matt turns to JUDE KELLECK(22), who is looking through the refrigerator.
MATT (Reluctant)
Sure.
Jude walks over with two BOTTLES. Jude sits down next to Matt and leans back; relaxed.
JUDE Anything good on?
Matt tosses the controller to Jude.
MATT
I don’t know, you check it out.
(Takes drink)
I’m not in the mood to watch TV anyway.
Jude turns down the volume and turns to face Matt.
JUDE
You sounded pretty upset on the

Matt shrugs his shoulders.
MATT I don’t know.
JUDE
Come on Mattie, you can talk to me.
(Hits Matt’s arm)
You had my back in high school, let me repay the favor.
Matt takes another drink of his beer.
MATT
You got any black on hand?
Jude laughs.
JUDE
Are you seriously asking me this?
(Gets up)
Come on bud, you know who your talking to right?
Matt rolls his eyes.
MATT
Yeah, yeah. Sorry. I just didn’t
want to ask you man, but I’m having a bad day. I’ll tell you all about it, but after I get high.
(Laughs)
Jude nods in agreement and runs to his room really quick. Matt finishes his beer and sets it down.
JUDE (O.S.)
Okay, so how much did you need?
Jude walks back into the living room with a CASE. Matt leans back and lets out a long sigh.
MATT Shit...
Jude becomes mad.

PREPARATION SEQUENCE FOLLOWS
Jude hands one NEEDLE to Matt. The two each inject themselves. They immediately become more calm and tired looking.
MATT (Softly)
Damn Jude, is this stuff new?
Jude looks over at Matt, who looks like he’s about to pass out. Jude also looks extremely high.
JUDE (Smiles)
Yeah man, you like it? Matt nods his head ‘YES’.
JUDE (CONT’D)
So, have you heard from your
brother lately? Matt shakes his head.
JUDE (CONT’D) Damn, that sucks man.
MATT
I just want to chill, let’s just

(Closes eyes)

BLACK SCREEN: PHONE RINGING
INT. JUDE KELLECK’S APARTMENT - LIVING ROOM - LATER
MATT wakes up to a BEEPING noise coming from his phone. He opens it.
SCREEN: FIVE MISSED CALLS FROM MEL’S CELL
Matt quickly shuffles to his feet. He looks over to Jude, who is playing VIDEO GAMES.
JUDE What’s the problem?
MATT
Why didn’t you wake me up? Didn’t
you hear my phone going off? (Beat)
What time is it? Jude pauses the game.
JUDE
It’s like almost three

Matt smacks himself in the head.
MATT (Frantic)
I was supposed to pick two fifteen.

Matt quickly gets out of the car
He walks inside and finds Melody
tears and is holding his case. Overcome with shame, he starts to turn around to leave.

Matt immediately stops and turns back to Melody.

Did you have to stay late or something? You could have called at least.
MATT (Nervous)
I don’t want to talk about it. (Looks at bag)
I’m sure you already know, though.
Matt walks over and sits down. Melody sits on the couch next to him.
MELODY (Cries)
How could you do this? (Reaches for bag) Want to explain this?
Melody opens the bag. Matt looks at the syringes and spoon. He is completely ashamed of himself.
MATT (Looks around)
Where is Derek?
Melody leans over and slaps Matt.
MELODY
Want to know how my day was?
(Beat)
Well, when I got the call at work telling my that MY son hadn’t been picked up from daycare yet, I was worried; for you too. I called you several times-

MELODY (CONT’D) But you didn’t pick up, so I
thought the worst of course. I had to leave work to pick Derek up, since I couldn’t get a hold of Karen either. Then I called your work-
Melody looks at Matt in disgust.
MELODY (CONT’D)
And found out you were fired, for
STEALING! (Beat)
So tell me, what was so important that you couldn’t even pick Derek up. The only thing I asked you to do for me this morning, and you couldn’t even managae that.
MATT (Worried)

MELODY (Screams)
He’s with Karen! (Beat)

Matt reaches for Melody’s HAND, but is REJECTED.
MELODY (Stern)
I can’t have an addict living in my home, putting my son in danger.
(Beat)
What if he would have found that bag? Did you ever think about that?
(Beat)
What the hell were you thinking?
Matt starts to realize the gravity of his addiction.
MATT (Genuine)
I understand. I still love you more than anything-
(Looks at her stomach)

Melody tries to hide her tears. Matt stands up.
MATT (CONT’D)
I’m going to prove to you that I AM

Matt starts to walk to the door.
MELODY Matt turns back to Melody.

key to the apartment.
Matt nods and reaches into his pocket. He pulls out the KEYS and places them on the counter.
MATT
Tell Derek I love him.
(Beat)
And that I’ll be back. Tell him I promise.
Melody shakes her head.
MELODY (Looks down)
Don’t make promises you know you can’t keep, Matt.
Matt takes one last look at her. He is disgusted with himself as he leaves. Melody breaks down and BAWLS.

EXT. CITY STREETS - LATER
Matt walks down the streets and sees that the SUN is beginning to set, but he doesn’t want to go to Jude’s. He sees a BUS coming and has a thought. He WAVES down the bus.
CUT TO:
I/E. BUS/COUNTRYSIDE - LATER
Matt gets off the bus. He walks for a while and comes upon an OLD STYLE HOUSE. Vines hang from the roof and sides. He looks at the MAILBOX: A. HOLLOWAY
MATT (To self)
This is definitely a mistake.
Matt reluctantly starts toward the house when the front door opens to a SILHOUETTE of a MAN standing in the doorway.
MAN
The hell are you doin’ here?
Matt kicks some dirt around.

MATT (Upfront)
Look- (Beat)
I know you don’t want to see me. Hell, I don’t really want to see you either, but I’m stuck Aaron; I could use a brother right now.
The figure steps out of the doorway, revealing AARON HOLLOWAY(25), a clean-cut country man.
AARON (Frank)
Why don’t you go to your dealers for help? They help you out right?
(Spits chew)
If it’s money your here for, forget about it.
Matt starts toward Aaron; he’s angry.
MATT
Your an asshole, you know that?
Aaron smiles.
AARON (Chuckles)
Known that for years, tell something I don’t know.
MATT
I don’t need any money.
(Begging)
I need a place to stay for days. I need to get clean.
AARON (Curious)

Aaron walks down the steps and up to Matt. Tension grows between them.
AARON (Furious)

You don’t know shit Matthew. And don’t give me that bull shit sob story. My friends in the East would laugh at you for being such a pussy.
Aaron spits some of his chew right at Matt’s feet. TEARS run down Matt’s face. He screams as he hits Aaron in the FACE.
Aaron rubs his face, looks back at Matt and smiles. He lets out a SIGH.
AARON (CONT’D)
Damn, you still got the stuff, I’ll
give you that. And I’m sorry, I didn’t mean that.

(Beat)
But I can’t let you stay here. do, who know’s what you’ll do. Goin’ through withdrawals will you crazy and do things you wouldn’t normally do. You need face this like a man; on your own.
Matt shakes his head.
MATT
It’s three years ago all over
again. (Sarcastic)

Aaron watches as Matt walks down the road.
EXT. COUNTRYSIDE - MOMENTS LATER
CUT TO:
Matt walks down the graveled side of the road. He pulls out his PHONE and DIALS JUDE’S CELL.
JUDE (V.O.) (Phone)
What’s up Matt? Matt looks up, embarrassed.
MATT (Phone)
Hey...
(Looks around)
I kind of- (Beat)
Need a favor.
INT. JUDE’S CAR - LATER
CUT TO:
Matt and Jude drive along. Jude looks over at Matt, who looks exhausted.
JUDE (curious)

(Beat)

JUDE (CONT’D) (Imitating Matt)
Oh, well Jude, since you ask. He’s a total dick, like usual. Thanks for asking.
Matt begins to chuckle.
JUDE (CONT’D)
Finally. I thought you’d never shut
up.
MATT
Thanks for picking me up.
(Looks out window) I really appreciate it.
JUDE
The problem doesn’t exist bro.
MATT (Confused)
What?
JUDE (Explains)
No problem. (Laughs)
Hey, reach in the glove compartment.
Matt opens the glove compartment.
JUDE (CONT’D)
Grab that pack of cigarettes.
Matt grabs the pack.
MATT (Opens pack)
Damn, it smells like chronic in here.
(Pulls out joint)
Oh wow, are these all joints in here?
Jude laughs.
JUDE
You know it, spark one up.
Matt lights one up and takes a few drags. He reaches to roll down the window.

JUDE (CONT’D)
No, keep the windows up. Let’s fog
box this bitch.
Matt has no objections with it. Jude turns on the radio.
JUDE (CONT’D) (Looks at Matt)
Hey, (Beat)
Puff, puff pass, come on.
Matt coughs and laughs as he hands Jude the joint.
MATT My bad.
JUDE (Takes deep hit)
Don’t trip, your good. (Holds in smoke)
I want- (Coughs)
To talk to you about a job. (Lets out smoke)
Matt is intrigued. Jude hands the joint back to him.
MATT
Oh yeah? What kind of work are we
talking about?
JUDE
Well talk when we get to the house.
Go ahead and kill the rest of that. (Turns radio up)
Just enjoy the ride.
Matt leans back, takes a deep breath and relaxes.
INT. JUDE’S APARTMENT - LATER
CUT TO:
Matt sits on the couch watching cartoons. He can’t stop laughing.
JUDE (O.S.)
What the hell are you watching?
(Walks into room) Wow, you must be lit.
Jude sits down with the CASE. Matt looks over at Jude.

JUDE (CONT’D)
Let’s get well real quick, and then
well talk about the job.
Jude looks over at Matt, who is staring at the case with an empty expression.
JUDE (CONT’D)
What’s wrong? That chronic too much
for you? (Laughs)
Matt watches as Jude pulls out the HEROIN, SPOON and TWO SYRINGES.
MATT (Leans forward)
No, it’s just- (Beat)
It’s just uh- (Beat)
I-I need to get clean.
Jude stops what he’s doing and looks over at Matt.
JUDE (Confused)
Wow, really? Well- (Beat)
I can’t have you doing this job if you’re going to be going through withdrawals, puking all over the place and shit.
Matt watches as Jude goes through the preparation routine. BEADS of SWEAT roll down Matt’s FOREHEAD.
MATT (Stern)
I know, but I can’t do it. God know’s I want to, believe me, but I have to get my self together and get Melody back.
Jude nods. He looks over at Matt, whose FACE is POURING with SWEAT.
JUDE (Worried)
When was the last time you fixed? Matt thinks a moment.

MATT
This morning when I woke up, around
nine thirty.
Jude looks at the CLOCK: 6:48 p.m.
JUDE (Impressed)
Damn, nine hours without anything? That’s pretty good.
(Beat)
I’ll just get someone else for the job, then.
MATT
Well damn, I need the money though.
Can I at least stay here until I get through the withdrawals?
JUDE
Of course, but it’s going to get
harder and harder to keep clean. Jude can see Matt is serious.
JUDE (CONT’D)
Hold on, (Gets up)
I’ll be right back.
Jude walks out of the living room and down the hallway. Matt sits, staring at the spoon filled heroin. His face is filled with temptation.
MATT (Sighs)
Just stay strong. Jude comes back into the room.
JUDE
Here-
Jude tosses Matt a MEDICINE BOTTLE of PILLS.
JUDE (CONT’D) Those should do the trick.
Matt inspects the bottle and the pills.
MATT (Confused) What are they?

JUDE (Sits back down)
They’re Methadone.
MATT (Embarrassed)
Methadone? (Beat)
What are they for?
Jude looks over at Matt, he’s astonished.
Matt nods.
JUDE (Laughs)
You serious?
JUDE (CONT’D)
They take care of the withdrawals.
(Beat)
Just take a couple of those and within an hour or two you’ll feel fine.
Jude begins to draw up the heroin into the needle.
JUDE (CONT’D)
I can’t have you getting sick if
your going to be my road-runner. Jude stands up and removes his belt.
MATT Your what?
(Confused) Your road-runner?
Jude ties the belt around his arm.
JUDE
Yeah, you know. Beep, beep? Road-
runner? From the cartoons you were just watching.
(Beat)
I want you to be my runner. My delivery boy, pretty much my bitch.
(Laughs)
Just joking about that last part.
Jude notices that Matt is fixated on watching the SPOON.
JUDE (CONT’D) You listening to me?

Matt snaps out of it.
MATT (Chuckles)
Yeah, sorry. (Beat)
You want me to deliver H for you?
Jude pushes the needle into his VEIN. Matt watches on in envy.
JUDE Yes sir.
(Sighs) You nailed it.
Jude unties the belt and pulls the needle out. He looks over at Matt.
JUDE (CONT’D)
Well, what do you think? Want to
make some serious cash?
Matt thinks for a moment. He looks at the bottle, and at the spoon that still has some dope in it.
MATT
I can start taking these tomorrow,
right? (Beat)
Wanna draw me up a dose? Jude looks over at Matt and laughs.
JUDE (Growing tired)
No.
(Beat)
But you can draw your own up. Matt is suddenly happy and full of energy.
MATT Thanks man.
Jude waves his hand as he starts to nod off.
JUDE (Slowly)
If it’s not- (Beat)
Not enough, make up some more.

Jude waves him off and passes out. MATT FIXES AND GETS HIGH
Matt lays on the couch, watching TV. He looks happy and content; he can barely keep his eyes open. He drifts off to sleep.
