E L James is the pen name of Erika Leonard, British author of the bestselling erotic novel Fifty Shades of Grey.

Fifty Shades of Grey grew out of a Twilight fan fiction novel that James wrote after reading that popular series. She has said that she started writing in 2009 after she read the Twilight series, and hasn't stopped since. She has described her Fifty Shades trilogy as her midlife crisis, written down and public.

James worked as a TV executive before her huge success as an author. She lives in West London with her husband and two teenage sons. She says that she had dreamed since early childhood of writing stories that people would fall in love with. It seems that her wish has come true.
