H. A. Rey eBooks
H.A. Rey is the author of the children’s books in the Curious George series. Rey was born as Hans Augusto Reyersbach in 1989 in Hamburg, Germany. He met his wife, his Curious George co-author Margret, while they were both living in Brazil during the 1930s.
After the couple moved to Paris in 1935, Rey was commissioned to write a children’s book after a published had seen his animal drawings. His first book, Cecily G. and the Nine Monkeys, was published in 1939 and is the first introduction of his most famous character.
The Reys, who were both Jewish, were forced to flee Paris during World War II, and they managed to escape the city hours before it fell to the Nazis. Among the few items they were able to take with them was the illustrated manuscript of Curious George.
The couple eventually settled in New York, and Curious George was published in 1941. The immediate success of the book resulted in the Reys being commissioned to write additional books with the character. Seven books were published, and 1947’s Curious George Takes a Job went on to win the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award in 1960.
In addition to his Curious George books, Rey also wrote The Stars: A New Way to See Them. In the 1952 book, he presented a new set of constellation diagrams that used cartoon images to make them more memorable.
The Reys moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts, where they lived until Hans’s death in 1977.
