WRITTEN BY CHILD PSYCHOLOGIST JAMES BEVERLY

As a child psychologist I wrote the Seamus the Sheltie children's books specifically to help you with those difficult tasks in a safe and fun way (no witchcraft or magic at all). Remembering the animal tales that were told to me by my grandfather, I decided to use simple, real life stories in books for children to help parents introduce important subjects in a safe way that was also fun and enjoyable. I had plenty of material for kids books, thanks to the exploits of my Sheltie, Seamus. Using my education in clinical child psychology I used clever and humorous ways to address for children the morals that accompany each story.

Interview with James Beverly

If you could be any character in fiction, who would you be?

I would choose the little hero of my books, Seamus the Sheltie. I would love to live in his fictional world where the good always prevail and have his many adventures, friends, and optimistic viewpoint on life.

What are some of your favorite books from your childhood?

The Little Prince, the many Uncle Remus stories, Aesop’s fables, King Solomon’s Mines, and oddly enough for a child, Moby Dick.

What book were you forced to read at school that no child should have to study?

In retrospect, all the many books that I was assigned to read have either enlightened me or broadened my perspective. Shakespeare would be the exception.

Name a book that you'd blush to be seen reading on the bus.

None really. I have long past the point of worrying about the opinion of others in such matters. I would however be careful to hide any cover or material that would be blatantly offensive to others or inappropriate for children to see.

What is a typical writing day like for you? Do you have a work set schedule? What are your surroundings?

I write best at night or in the early morning hours. My thoughts flow better at these times when it is quiet with minimal distractions.

What is the greatest challenge you have had to overcome in your writing career?

Learning to gracefully accept and learn from the criticism of some reviewers.

What is the best writing advice you've ever been given?

Whenever possible let the characters present the story and let others read and critique the work prior to submitting it to a good editor.

How much of your writing is based on things you see in real life?

The vast majority.

Do you have any children or grandchildren? If so, what do they think of your books?

Yes, one daughter and one grandson. They love the Seamus the Sheltie books.

If you could choose one superhero power, what would it be and why?

The gentle nature, inner strength, and wisdom of my grandfather. He was always my superhero.
