Jill Amber Menard

Jill Amber Menard grew up in a log cabin in the middle of Wisconsin. She has dreamed of being an author since she was 5-years-old. She loves creating characters and escaping into whimsical worlds. As a kid, Jill would often wander off by herself into the woods, acting out her stories to an audience of skittish squirrels. She went on to pursue a career in dance, starting her own non-profit professional dance company in New Zealand. Jill now teaches aerial dance for a living and performs in circus events in which she enthusiastically twirls around in the air, wearing neon colors and polka dot shorts. Jill has written three novels and is working diligently on making her inner 5-year-old’s dream come true. The Odd Duck is inspired by Jill’s own trials and tribulations as an awkward kid who didn’t fit in with her peers. http://jillambermenard.com

Story: The Odd Duck

Interview

Each week authors will be given a new question to answer which will lend additional insight into their story and writing process. Do you have a question you'd like to see the authors answer? Tweet it to @aNextAuthor!

Q:
What is the best writing advice you've ever heard?
A:
“If you get stuck, try something different,” my dad told me. Because of this I have experimented with lots of creative writing projects, including self-publishing my own raw dessert cookbook!
Q:
When you start a new story do you prepare an outline in advance or do you just jump right in?
A:
I have tried outlines and tried even harder to stick to them. But in the end my characters ALWAYS rebel. It's like they have a plan that is different than the one I have. I've learned to just flow with it.
Q:
How do you deal with writing criticism, apart from just ignoring it?
A:
It's hard to not get defensive or hurt by criticism. Over the years I've learned to remain quiet and to really listen to what the person has to say about my work.
Q:
America's Next Author has been running for almost 8 weeks. If you could re-submit now, would you change anything about your story?
A:
I loosely based the bad boy character on a boy I knew from my childhood. He really was from Brazil and I really was in love with him! If I could go back, I would probably just make him an ordinary boy from Wisconsin to avoid the racist comments.

Jill could be the next Judy Blume!

Rating starRating starRating starRating starRating star
I have noticed that a few readers are saying that Jill's style is reminiscent of Judy Blume. I would have to agree 100%. Jill doesn't hold back while exposing the inner psyche and workings of the mind. Some say this story is only for young adults but I disagree. Who as an adult doesn't experience times of awkwardness and not fitting in? Even at work there are those who somehow seem to get all the attention and have all the luck. Yet the underlying message is to simply be oneself and YES! This is the formula for true happiness at its core! I also have to say that this young Ella reminds me of the young boy in the book, "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time". In a world that is full of complex feelings it is sometimes easier to try to explain things via rigid equations than to be lost trying to understand the vast complexity of human emotion. This story is unique and highly creative. Well done Jill!!!

I thought that this story was amazing! It really relates to teens because we go through stuff like this all the time. I really enjoyed reading this and I think that you deserve to win! I think it is also amazing how you are so willing to let everyone read about your childhood. I know that this probably wasn't your exact childhood but I find it amazing how open you are! I think overall you did a spectacular job! Keep up the good work.

The story captures the tween angst of being caught between girlhood and burgeoning womanhood. Many readers will be able to relate to this story. The odd duck equation is one this grown up swans wish she knew growing up.

The character of Ella was well-developed but the equations in the story broke-up the narrative flow.

A great story for young girls who are trying to find their way through friendships and first love. If only we all were given equations to help us through the middle school years. Thanks for sharing your writing, Jill! Can't wait to read more.

This true-to-life story captures many of the emotions involved in being a young girl working her way through adolescence in this country....feeling isolated, unimportant...the constant search for meaning and recognition. Ella's story rings true...kudos to the author!

This story was a joy to read. Although it did not have the happy ending one might expect, it captured all the emotions a tween girl would have. It was very relateable and brought me back to my middle school years.

I'm a middle-aged man, so I'm sure the author can understand my lack of enthusiasm for this story as a reader. It just simply isn't a book I would pick up and read. But, many of the reviewers pointed out what a wonderful YA book this would make, and I have to agree. I think the author captured the moments of those awkward years with great detail and emotion. I do agree with one reviewer, that if more of the story had been shown, rather than told, it would be much stronger. But any story that removes a reader from their present state of mind, and takes them to a world outside their own, is a successful story. I imagine that any reader of this piece drifts to some moment of their own life where they remember those awkward years. Mine was a zit on the end of my nose that made me look like Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer. It appeared on the morning of the day I was going to attend my first Sadie Hawkins Rolling Skating party. I wanted to die. A very nice job!

I thought it was really cute while also staying realistic and not just giving into a happy ending. Good job!

Jill brings her characters to life with vivid prose, conveying the painful awkwardness of the young female protagonist, who tries so find herself and her place among her peers. The dialogue of the characters rings true and communicates the emotional nuances and fickleness of friendship and young love at an age where every detail matters – where one conversation, uncool outfit, rumor or boy can initiate a roller coaster ride of emotion and self-doubt. Many readers will identify with this story!

As I was reading "The Odd Duck", I was brought back to my own years in middle school where I often felt like the odd girl. Menard's style and content remind me of the work of Judy Blume, and yet establishes its own originality through Ella's use of formula. I think young adults will appreciate the candid exploration of budding attraction and emotion. I loved this story!

This is a great short story! I think this could totally be expanded to a full-length book - or series! I love the equations that Ella makes through out the story, they really underline her geeky-ness and add a humorous twist. This is a charming story about a girl who tries so hard to fit in - and it reflects everyone's secret insecurities. I think people of all ages can relate to Ella. Jill definitely has a lot of talent!
