Interview

Each week authors will be given a new question to answer which will lend additional insight into their story and writing process. Do you have a question you'd like to see the authors answer? Tweet it to @aNextAuthor!

Q:
What is the best writing advice you've ever heard?
A:
Write! No matter what, just write! @AdviceToWriters and @Quotes4Writers are two Twitter Handles that I follow religiously. They help pry my lazy self off the couch and make me want to write.
Q:
When you start a new story do you prepare an outline in advance or do you just jump right in?
A:
Once I've come up with what I think is an amazing idea, I don't have the patience to prepare. An outline to me is like a tease. It's like a story being dangled in front of my face, but I can't write it.
Q:
How do you deal with writing criticism, apart from just ignoring it?
A:
There's no way that every single person who reads your story will like it, but everything a writer writes feels like their best work and when the excitement doesn't carry over to the reader, the writer feels a small sense of failure. I do, at least.
Q:
America's Next Author has been running for almost 8 weeks. If you could re-submit now, would you change anything about your story?
A:
I would have went back to edit a few times. It seems some of my reviews critiqued my uses of tense. Other than that, I wouldn't change the story line at all. I loved it. Still do.

Oh yeah. Strong story. Few minor typo issues, but gruesome in all the right ways. Well done.

Gruesome, and yet I found the writing to be pretty good. I didn't expect the ending, but that was the best part.

Great idea for a horror story. Not usually a fan of horror books, but this one really kept me reading. I could see this story winning

Such a twisted, gruesome story... I love it! Many stories in this competition are just plain boring compared to this one. This author’s story portrays one man's past and leaves to the imagination another's horrible future in a concise, yet entertaining collection of events. My eyebrows were raised the entire time I was reading. Well done!

This story is so captivating that I couldn’t even pay attention to the writer’s technique while reading it. I was only concerned with what happened next! So I read the story a second time with the intention of giving some honest feedback. Again, I was so engrained in the plot that I just couldn’t slow down even though I knew what was going to happen. This author has WONDERFUL creativity and should really try to get something published. John could truly be America’s next big author.

Great story. I thought it was a great idea and storyline. I really liked how it did not feel drawn out. The detail to this story is what truly made it. I felt as if I was walking beside the characters throughout the story. 5 stars

Wow! This is an awesome story and is well written! You really bring Monty and the reporter to life, facilitating the readers bond with the characters. This makes the events that follow seem much more horrific! You have a very vivid imagination! Good luck!

You have a lot of interesting elements to your story. Love the horror, the suspense, and the curiousity in your story. One of my favorites out of those that I read. Great story

This story has all the characteristics of a great horror story. The characters and setting seem very real. Suspense starts right from the beginning. I like how your story is not based on just one small event, but a whole sequence of tragic events. It's very interesting and fun to read. You seem to be one of the good writers in this competition. Good luck!
