Interview

Each week authors will be given a new question to answer which will lend additional insight into their story and writing process. Do you have a question you'd like to see the authors answer? Tweet it to @aNextAuthor!

Q:
What is the best writing advice you've ever heard?
A:
Write! No matter what, just write! @AdviceToWriters and @Quotes4Writers are two Twitter Handles that I follow religiously. They help pry my lazy self off the couch and make me want to write.
Q:
When you start a new story do you prepare an outline in advance or do you just jump right in?
A:
Once I've come up with what I think is an amazing idea, I don't have the patience to prepare. An outline to me is like a tease. It's like a story being dangled in front of my face, but I can't write it.
Q:
How do you deal with writing criticism, apart from just ignoring it?
A:
There's no way that every single person who reads your story will like it, but everything a writer writes feels like their best work and when the excitement doesn't carry over to the reader, the writer feels a small sense of failure. I do, at least.
Q:
America's Next Author has been running for almost 8 weeks. If you could re-submit now, would you change anything about your story?
A:
I would have went back to edit a few times. It seems some of my reviews critiqued my uses of tense. Other than that, I wouldn't change the story line at all. I loved it. Still do.

Very well written and creative. It's very descriptive. I don't think I'll ever get these grotesque images out of my head.

Author, I'm going to be the naysayer in your sea of positive reviews. I'll start by making two statements. One, I don't particularly care for the horror genre. A story has to be really good for me to like it. I consider, The Shining, a really good horror story. Two, I did like your idea of the spirit, monster, demon, whatever it was tracking down its victim through another person. Technically, this story fell really short. It was almost entirely all telling and no showing, which is writing 101. The change of POV midstream did not work at all. And there were numerous plot holes and unfulfilled details left throughout the story. I won't point them all out, but let's pick one. The MC states to the old man outside his cabin that he would have let him know that he was coming but he couldn't track him down. Well,, if he couldn't track him down, how did he find the cabin? A nice idea, could have used a lot more development.

This was a creative idea, and I very much like the idea of an innocent person unknowingly transporting a monster to its victim. In order to capitalize on the horror, it would be useful to do more "showing" rather than telling. Much of this piece takes part as exposition -- either on the part of the reporter, in the beginning, or through dialogue in the latter part. It would be a scarier piece, and the payoff seemingly more justified, if the details came through detailed experience rather than through exposition.
