Sky Blue Dreams
Joscelin Quinn
I hear my alarm go off, jeez it’s morning already! I hate those days when it feels like you just fell asleep and it’s already time to get up. “Ahh I hate Mondays.” I groan as I roll over without opening my eyes, reaching for the alarm clock. I aim for the snooze button, five more minutes won’t hurt.
I wake up to a buzzing noise in my ear, it’s my phone. I reach under my pillow and answer without checking who it is.
“Hello.”
“Hey Selene are you coming into work today?” Oh crap! it’s my boss. I check the time. Double crap! It’s 8:17 a.m. I’m more than an hour late for work.
“Or did you forget you had the morning shift today?” I sit up and try to fully wake up.
“Sorry Hannah I just over slept I’ll be there in like thirty, sorry”
“It’s okay I’ll see you when you get here then.” I hang up without saying bye and quickly get up.
I rush to the bathroom, no time for a shower. Good thing I showered before going to bed last night. I brush my teeth and comb my tangled dark brown hair in a ponytail, no time to straighten or curl. I put on my usual work make-up black mascara, black eyeliner, and red lipstick. I put on my uniform, my faded black collared shirt with the coffee shops logo on the left side and my name on the right, and my tan Dickies. I jump around putting on my socks and my black old Nikes. I grab my keys and head out the door.
I arrive at the shop and quickly head to the back of the counter. I see my co-worker and roommate Sally attending to the costumers in the order line.
“Good Morning Selene.” She looks over at me and gives me a soft smile.
“Sall why didn’t you wake me up this morning” I quickly question her.
“Sorry, I had a bad morning and forgot you had the morning shift.”
“You think you had a bad morning?” I mumble and roll my eyes at her.
“Oh don’t be a grouch and go refill table fives coffee mug please” I give her a fake smile as I put on my apron and grab the half full coffee pot and walk towards table five.
I look up at the guy sitting at the table. In that same moment his eyes meet mine. His eyes are gorgeous, sky blue gorgeous. I’m dazed by his looks. He’s very handsome like he just stepped out of a magazine kind of handsome. He smiles at me as he runs his fingers through his semi short black hair. I stare at him while I try to remember why I walked over here. Oh yeah Refill!
“Umm, would you like a refill?” I ask him with a low voice not sure if he even heard me. He slowly turns to looks at the name on my shirt.
“No, thank you Selene I’ve had plenty of coffee this morning,” He gives me a full teeth smile. His teeth are gorgeous too, pearl white gorgeous. I smile back at him as I stare into his eyes. His eyes are crystal blue they remind me of a perfect sky blue summer day. His look is intimidating like if he was looking right into my soul. He is so gorgeous in his navy blue sweater, I’ve never seen him before but blue is definitely his color. All of a sudden I see him blush and look down at his coffee mug, and I get the feeling that he could hear my thoughts. I know it’s silly but I quickly shut my thoughts down. Maybe I was staring too much?
“Is there anything else I can get you?” I quickly ask to avoid the long silence.
“No thank you, I’m good” He shows me his pearly whites again.
“You have gorgeous eyes, honey brown they look sweet.” His voice is gorgeous too. I smile at him and I can feel my face turning red.
“Honey brown is nothing compared to sky blue.” I reply as I look down at the coffee pot in my hand.
“I disagree, I think honey brown is my new favorite color.” He murmurs and takes a sip of his coffee without looking away. I’m pretty sure my face is red hot by now.
Just as I was about to ask for his name.
“Selene the boss wants to talk to you ASAP.” Sally yells across the shop. I roll my eyes at her and look back at sky blue.
“Let me know if you need anything” I smile at him and walk back to the counter. I Hand Sally the coffee pot and head to the back to talk to Hannah. I see Hannah on her laptop checking her emails.
“Hey Hannah I’m sorry for coming in late today I lost track of time.”
She looks up at me and smiles. “It’s ok just make sure u don’t make it a daily routine, you’re getting the morning shift this whole week.” What!
“Adam is sick and will be out for a week, so you’re covering his shifts, since mornings are our busiest time of day and we can’t be one man short.” Her voice gets more serious.
“Is that fine with you?” Why does she ask that after she practically already forced it on me.
“Yea no prob I can cover Adams shift.”
“Great. Now get back to work.” She points at the door and gets back to her emails.
I rush back to the counter so I can get another glimpse of sky blue. I look over at table five. He’s gone! Well he was almost done with his coffee, but I didn’t even get to ask him for his name. Or did he leave in a rush while I was away? I was staring at him for more than a few seconds. Maybe I freaked him out. I quickly try to forget about it and get back to work, Monday mornings are always our busiest.
Thirty more minutes and my shift is over, and I’m counting every second till I’m free from the aroma of coffee beans. I’m just leaning against the counter waiting, watching Sally walk up to me.
“Hey Johnny, Melissa and I are going to the street fair later on tonight, you want to join us?”
“Sure, around what time?”
“Like around seven or so, but we are walking since it’s a couple blocks away from our apartment.”
“That’s fine, I was just about to tell you that we should walk it either way.” She smiles at me and walks to the back. I hear her telling Johnny and Melissa that I agreed to go with them. I don’t really know Johnny and Melissa that well since I have the afternoon shift at the shop, but from what I’ve heard from Sally they are okay in my book. I don’t mind spending time with them outside of work especially since I’m going to be working with them all weak.
I get home, bursting in through the door and head towards the kitchen. I’m starving. I heat up my left over Chinese food from last night and take over the couch. I figured I have some time for TV before I have to get ready for the fair. I flip through the channels but I can’t find anything worth watching. I turn of the TV and I realize Sally isn’t home yet. She must of gone shopping for shoes since last night she was complaining that she was running out of cute flats. I decide to waste some time on my laptop and check my messages before I shower and get ready for tonight.
Its 7:09 p.m. I’m Showered, dressed and ready to go. I have on my dark blue skinny jeans, my black and blue stripped sweater, and my black Ugg boots. I figured it’s appropriate for a fresh autumn night. I curl my hair to have the perfect wide waves falling down, and I decide not to wear make-up, mostly because I’m feeling a little lazy to do so.
“Selene are you ready?” I hear Sally call out from the living room. I grab my bag and head to the living room. Sally, Johnny and Melissa are waiting.
“Okay I’m ready let’s go.” I smile at them and we head out the door.
We can see the fair lights from outside our building, it’s just a couple of blocks away.
“I hear the fair is bigger this year, It covers five more main streets.” Melissa says in an excited tone almost sounding like a little girl.
“I heard they have a bigger Ferris wheel too.”Johnny adds to Melissa’s fair fact.
“Oh I love those.” Now I sound like a little girl. Me and Melissa giggle.
“Okay first we have to buy a funnel cake I’ve been craving one since last years fair.” We all nod and agree with Sally.
We get to the fair.
“Wow it does look bigger than last year” Melissa looks around not knowing where to concentrate.
Sally quickly spots the food court.
“Food, funnel cake come on lets get it line before it gets longer.” We rush to go buy snacks. We each order a funnel cake and a drink and head to a empty table.
“Oh I forgot to get napkins” Melissa looks around to see if any one got any.
“I’ll go get some.” I tell Melissa.
“Thanks Selene.”
I get up and go back to the counter. I reach for the napkins and the same times I reach I bump hands with someone. I look to see who it is. Sky Blue! My eyes widen and I can feel my face getting red.
“Sorry I didn’t see you.” I murmur feeling confused.
“Selene.” He smiles.
“Sky blue.” I whisper.
He laughs and I can tell he’s blushing.
“Sky blue.” He says with a smile and laughs again.
“You remembered my name?” I quickly ask him.
“And you remembered mine.” He raises his eyebrow and shows me his pearly whites. I giggle and look down at my hands.
“I’m Kevin.” He says as he reaches to get a napkin.
“You’re here alone?” he asks.
“No, I came with some of my co-workers, what about you?”
“I’m here with a few friends.” He smiles at me.
“But they all came with dates.” He adds.
“You don’t have a date?” I ask in a surprised tone. He looks at me and I can see the light bulb light up above his head.
“Would you like to be my date?” Wow did he really just say that. My eyes widen at the thought.
“Sure.” I reply looking down at my boots and I can feel my smile reach my ears.
I look back to the table n see sally looking at us. I give her a signal that I’m going to have to separate from the group. She smiles giving me a thumbs up and gets back to eating her funnel cake. I look over at Kevin and see him signaling his friends that he’ll be separating from them too. I blush and look up at him. He smiles and gives me a wink. Gosh he is so handsome.
“By the way you look gorgeous, I like your hair.” He says giving me another wink.
“Come on lets go play some games.” He grabs my hand and we walk to a ring toss stand.
“Can I get two turns.” He tells the guy at the stand.
“You each get three rings, you have to make each ring in a bottles. There are three levels. If you make it in the first level you get a small prize, the second level is the medium prize, and the third is the large prize.” He says as he hands us each our rings. Knowing that I have horrible aim I throw my first ring towards the bottles in level one. I miss, I throw my second one and miss again. I throw the third one, I make it! I burst out laughing.
“At least I made one.” I look over at Kevin just as he’s makes in his third ring on the level three bottles.
“Wow good aim.” I suddenly don’t feel accomplished for at least making one in.
“What prize do you want?” He looks at me and smiles. I giggle and look up at the selection of prizes.
“Can I get the pink unicorn?” I reply and I can feel my face turning red again. He hands me the stuffed pink unicorn and grabs my hand while we walk passing the other games.
“Thank you.” I look at him and give him a soft smile.
I feel his fingers playing around with mine. I giggle and play with his too.
“You want to get up on the Farris wheel next? I hear it’s bigger this year.” I nod and smile remembering that Johnny had mentioned it earlier. We get in line and wait for our turn.
“So, Selene are you enjoying yourself?” he asks.
“Yes I am , thanks again for the unicorn it was real sweet of you.”
“Anything for those sweet honey brown eyes.” He smiles and gives me a wink.
Gosh he sure knows how to make a girls face turn red. Finally it’s our turn to get up on the Farris wheel.
We climb on, the guy running the ride reaches up and pulls down the safety bar so we won’t fall off. Every few seconds the Farris wheel moves up as the other people get on. We finally reach the top as the ride stops again.
“Wow all the lights look so pretty from up here.” I look down and admire the sight.
“Yea but I think looking at you is a way prettier sight.” He says as he grabs my hand. I turn to look at him and blush. We just sit there looking at each other. He smiles at me and bites his lips. He gets closer to me and kisses me. His lips are so soft, I’m completely lost in the kiss. I lean closer to him and put my hand on the back of his head. This kiss feels so perfect like out of a movie, pinch me if I’m dreaming.
I hear my alarm go off, I look up at my alarm clock it’s 6:00 in the morning. I sit up and turn off the alarm. It was all just a dream. A very long vivid dream. Ugh that is so not fair how come my dreams are more exciting than my actual life. I get up from bed, I have to get ready for work. I have the morning shift today, the only part of my dream that is actually true. I head to the bathroom and bump into sally as she comes out from her shower.
“Morning Sall.”
“Morning, hey you want to carpool since we go in at the same time today?” She asks as she heads back to her room.
“Sure why not.”
I brush my teeth and get dressed for work. I walked to the kitchen and fix myself a bagel with cream cheese before we head out. Sally walks out of her room.
“You ready?”
“Yep Lets go before it gets late.” I reply. I grab my keys and we head out the door.
We arrive at the shop. Melissa and Johnny are already there attending our first morning customers. I head to the back to put my bag away and grab my apron. I bump into Hannah on my way back.
“Morning Hannah.” I smile at her.
“Morning Selene, You and Johnny have table orders this morning. Melissa and Sally will be at the register.”
“Okay got it.” I head back and go to Johnny so he can fill me in on what tables I got.
“I already took all the orders except for table five.” He informs me.
“Okay, cool I’ll take table five then.” I reply. He hands me the coffee pot and walks back to the counter.
I turn around to table five and I can’t believe my eyes. I feel my jaw drop to the floor. It’s him, Sky blue!
