Interview with Judy Hall

Can you give us a brief (2-3 sentence) explanation of how crystals have the power to affect a person's health?

Not in three short sentences!

If you could give someone only one tip to improve their health, what would that be?

Drink Shungite water daily. (You need to steep a bag of raw Shungite in water for 48 hours to activate it but I put it in a filter jug which I top up as necessary, on the homeopathic dilution principle, and it keeps the water active). Interesting research is being done on this stone. (See 101 Power Crystals and the forthcoming Crystal Bible volume 3 for its incredible properties).

What are some of your favorite books from your childhood?

As a very young child I was very fond of Winnie the Pooh and I still tend to shorthand people as Eeyore, Tigger, Piglet or Pooh types and sing silly Pooh songs in my head. I also loved the Wind in the Willows and the Alison Uttley books which gave me a lifelong connection to nature. Alice in Wonderland and Alice Through The Looking Glass helped me immensely because I was experiencing weird psychic things all the time and those books made  it seem quite normal.  By the time I was eleven I was reading adult fiction, especially historical novels and often felt I’d been there myself. When I became an adult and learned about reincarnation it made perfect sense. And finally when I was at school we read a book, which I think was called Cranes Fly South. It reintroduced me to Egypt and I was hooked from then on.

Tell us one thing about yourself you wouldn’t want us to know.

All is not as it seems.

What was the book that most influenced your life and why?

Christine Hartley’s A Case for Reincarnation. I was having very vivid past life recall experiences – but had never heard of the concept of reincarnation so was very confused - and when this book fell off the library shelf onto my head it literally opened up a new world for me. I read it through twice at one sitting then contacted Christine who became my mentor.

If you had a book club, what would it be reading and why?

I do have a book club of a kind. I belong to an eclectic writers’ group and we read work-in-progress to each other for constructive criticism and the input of new perspectives when we get bogged-down. We have everything, thrillers, crime, a war saga, children and adult’s historical fiction, romance, poetry and so much more. I love it all. It is so good to hear excellent writing from our best-selling authors and to see how rapidly beginners improve. There’s no competition, only cooperation and mutual support. Bliss!

What is a typical writing day like for you? Do you have a work set schedule? What are your surroundings?

I never have a typical day. Sometimes I get up and start writing and barely stop ‘till it’s time to sleep. Other times I might get up in the middle of the night - that tends to be when I’m working on a novel and have dreamed the next portion. When I’m home I write in my study, which is upstairs in my cottage in Dorset. I look out onto a huge conifer tree, which is probably just as well or I’d never get any work done as the view down the valley is stunning. Although I do tend to watch the birds in next door’s apple tree. But then I also write when and where I can. I’ve written articles and stories by the pool, sea or ancient ruins, when on holiday and on trains, planes, hotel rooms… and I proof read books (mine and those of the writing group)  just about everywhere.

What is the greatest challenge you have had to overcome in your writing career?

Doing too many things – and being ahead of my time. Publishers tend to want a writer to specialise in one thing only but I’m a polymath.  I’m a karmic astrologer and past life therapist who has always used crystals. My first book was on karmic astrology and then I wrote on past lives and their effect on the present. But once I’d written The Crystal Bible I became known as a crystal writer. Fortunately the lovely Margaret Cahill, who publishes my specialist astrology books, was also willing to take on my psychic protection and reincarnation stuff and started Flying Horse Publications to do so. She encouraged me to write The Soulmate Myth and The Book of Why.

The biggest challenge came when I wanted to publish my time-slip novel Torn Clouds. There wasn’t a genre into which it fitted (Kate Mosse hadn’t written Labyrinth then) so mainstream publishers felt unable to take it. After Labyrinth was a success one of those mainstream publishers rang to say they’d take it but John Hunt of O Books, who published Crystal Prescriptions, had already published it under spiritual fiction and has done the ebook which I’m delighted about.

Luckily Fair Winds Press, with whom I did 101 Power Crystals, were willing to take a chance on a book that combined two of my greatest passions: sacred sites and crystals. That will be out later in the year.

I’m writing another novel now, which incorporates yet another – surprising to me - direction. I dreamed the opening in its entirety, and a great deal of the remaining story. I haven’t offered it for publication yet but I have my fingers firmly crossed although I think it will probably have to come out under a pseudonym.

What is the best writing advice you've ever been given?

Just get on with it. There’s no need to start at the beginning and work through in an orderly fashion. Write what comes to you and the rest will fill in. It works for me!

If you could choose one superhero power, what would it be and why?

Bi-location. I intensely dislike travelling on planes and it would enable me to visit all the places I’ve yet to see and to accept invitations to give workshops around the globe.
