Author Interview

Kellene Killmer

Finals will be starting soon, and I'm really excited to see who the final nominee and all of the wildcards will be! This contest has done so much for me, not only as a nominee, but as an ambitious writer in general. It has made me realize that I don't need to suffer through query after query during this time of belt-tightening among publishers, and that I am inventive and boisterous enough to promote myself. Therefore, I invite you all to check out my new home on the web, inspired and fueled by all that I have learned through ANA! www.kellenekillmer.com is live in both web and mobile versions, and features a bio, ebooks for sale, and an excerpt of my soon-to-be-released novel. Please take a gander, get to know who I am and what I write beyond "Ambient Light", and consider me as your well-rounded and ambitious choice for America's Next Author! I have widely varied interests, and as such I have intended throughout my life to be a teacher/nurse/actress/lawyer/interior designer. In actuality, I have been a nanny, barista, secretary, nursing assistant, communications technology salesperson, and other sprinklings or smatterings of this and that. Only one ambition has remained constant throughout all of these occupational wanderings: to be a writer. Not the kind of writer who tells people they've just met "oh, I'm a writer," to which the new acquaintance raises a quizzical eyebrow and says "Oh, really? That's cool," suspecting that it's probably one of those things where this "writer" won a poetry contest in 3rd grade by rhyming something about white flowers, then started a novel in 8th grade that she's still "polishing." Nope, I'm not planning on being that kind of writer. I'm planning on being the kind of writer from whom you always want to see more. I'm planning on being the kind of writer who captures genuines voices in the capsules of her characters and watches them effervesce with life as her readers give them faces. I'm planning on being the kind of writer who challenges social norms, forces family dramas to deal with themselves, and enchants with lively dialogue.

Interview

Each week authors will be given a new question to answer which will lend additional insight into their story and writing process. Do you have a question you'd like to see the authors answer? Tweet it to @aNextAuthor!

Q:
What is the best writing advice you've ever heard?
A:
Write Every Day. It keeps your mind flexible, your fingers nimble, and your imagination fluid. These things contract and become less pliable the longer they are left unused, so daily writing is crucial to any writer.
Q:
When you start a new story do you prepare an outline in advance or do you just jump right in?
A:
The one time I outlined a story I couldn't finish it. It was told in twelve chapters with each chapter representing one hour, and it was too rigid for my characters to be comfortable enough to tell me what they wanted from it.
Q:
How do you deal with writing criticism, apart from just ignoring it?
A:
Even the gentlest criticisms can be hard to hear, but the important thing to remember is that an outside perspective is the one thing you can never provide yourself. I try to apply constructive criticism when I realize how others perceive my work.
Q:
America's Next Author has been running for almost 8 weeks. If you could re-submit now, would you change anything about your story?
A:
I would have tightened up the narrative and balanced the dialogue more; perhaps bringing it in earlier. I don't think Jerry would have been inclined to say much, but he might have eavesdropped on Elena talking to other party guests.

captures the chaos of the scenario :) what exactly is happening and what indeed will happen...also holds the reader in suspense just enough to want more and to want to see the dialogue...will this work out the way we think it will :) should i identify with this smitten fellow :) hopefully if i do Camus will not creep in and cause some terrible disaster to The Stranger :~}}

Most wonderfully written. I love the tense structure of the story at the beginning & ending with such a light feel towards the characters.

Very captivating; the dialogue between Jerry and Elena is appealing. "Ambient Light" was masterful and equally intriguing.

Great, witty dialogue. Showed the struggle one goes through not knowing if someone even knows they exist which I think most of us have gone through once or twice at least. The topic of conversation did seen to get a bit too comfortable for two people who really didn't know one another that well yet, but it made the conversation more humorous and helped us see quickly that they both had a thing for each other. Overall a great read.

A really cool vibe. Kellene Kilmer created two endearing characters, threw them into the water and let them sink or swim. Bravo.

I really enjoyed this short story. KellyKillmer draws the reader in with some really nice descriptive work at the beginning and then the rest is dialogue which brings the characters to life. A real feel of modern Shakespeare to the whole piece

Kelly has a great way of making you feel what her characters are going through and really brings the little details home. The way she makes us feel Jerry's insecurities through his interaction with Elena as well as his attraction is both overt and subtle. She has the ability to write both men and women in a way that character through nuanced physical interaction as well as dialogue. And I loved the way she used Jerry's inner monologue as a way to endear an almost unlikable character to me as a reader and get me on his side, even WITH all his flaws. Lastly, she writes some great repartee that is witty, fun and yes, I said it, hooooot. If only I could be so lucky as to meet a woman like Elena. Highly recommended!

This was a great short story. It reminded me of my youth, as I got carried away with the flirtatiousness of the characters. It was a joy to read and wished there were more chapters to the story! Congratulations, Kellene!

Although I did find the beginning a bit wordy, I liked the banter between Jerry and Elena. I think this would appeal to most readers because this kind of "connection" is refreshing and, for the vast majority, few and far between. I did enjoy the romance and the symmetry of the characters, surely a great romance novel could be born from this.

I think this is a great romance. It is well-written, the characters, their setting and their predicament are completely believable. The story obviously strikes a chord with a great many people, but I think this has become a contest for Sci-Fi, Fantasy and Thriller writers. I am not sure if "gritty realism and the occasional romance" will fit in with the other-worldly theme this contest has taken on over the past four weeks.

Jerry's desperate, but out-of-reach mannerisms in which he struggles with toward Elena are very well executed. You know exactly the emotions he struggles with for the pleasure of simply meeting Elena. When the two finally come together, you know this is an epic event for Jerry. The banter is fun and very visual for the reader. Great short story!

I actually had to laugh at this one as I've been here in a similar situation before. The banter is fantastic and the little twist at the end was pretty funny. Maybe a bit too short though - I easily could have read on for a lot longer.

I love short stories. Short stories that leave you wanting just a bit more this story, has that. The dialog is witty, the author puts you right dab in the middle of the conversation, like sitting on an ottoman eating bread sticks. I would love to read more of this author.

Oh the awkwardness of it all! How many people have been in that situation where they over think how they will approach someone, only to muck it up?! I had to laugh, because I could see myself in Jerry's position, and could even see myself being awestruck by the fact that someone I admired was actually awestruck by me! Fantastic short story!

Much like all the other reviewers, I liked the characters. I could relate to them and their idiosyncrasies regarding the party and ultimately their relationship. The banter between the two of them was well done. There was just one thing about the story structure that I think would have improved the piece overall. That being, to even out the placement of the described action and the dialog within the story. The entire first part of the story was almost entirely described action / backstory with no dialog. Then the latter part of the story was almost all dialog with very little described action. It's a nitpick. It's a very sweet story!
