Story: The Black Book

Interview

Each week authors will be given a new question to answer which will lend additional insight into their story and writing process. Do you have a question you'd like to see the authors answer? Tweet it to @aNextAuthor!

Q:
What is the best writing advice you've ever heard?
A:
Write what you know.
Q:
When you start a new story do you prepare an outline in advance or do you just jump right in?
A:
For the shorter stories, I prefer to jump right in, but for the longer pieces, I follow an outline.
Q:
How do you deal with writing criticism, apart from just ignoring it?
A:
Take some of the comments and use them.
Q:
America's Next Author has been running for almost 8 weeks. If you could re-submit now, would you change anything about your story?
A:
Yes. I would edit it better.

While there are some intriguing ideas in here, this story felt very disjointed. I kept feeling as if everyone in the story knew things that I, as a reader, did not know. You also should be aware of the fact that Eros is more commonly associated with the ancient god of passion, and most readers are going to assume that's what is meant here. Still, it's good that you got your ideas down so that you can now begin to rework them. I hope the feedback you're receiving is helpful. Please take a moment to read my story, "Dating Safari," and leave your comments.

A good story, but a little hard to follow. I also have questions about the need for a gun with people that have space folding technology. Define your characters and tweak your story a bit. All in all, a promising story line.

You need to work on your story structure. How could Dr. Harris return the book to Amber when they hadn't even been to the appointment yet. Then you have Amber recognize a ring when you have not said anything about her knowing Dr. Harris previously. Your story needs some editing.
