Author Interview

Lori Paris

I am a stay at home mom with 3 boys, a husband and a dog. I have a B.A. in Journalism and a Psychology minor. I am obsessed with the television show CRIMINAL MINDS and enjoy exploring the darker side of the human psyche. I have always loved to write and am currently working on a book. The main character in my short story, Charlotte, has also inspired me to create a longer work about her life.

Interview

Each week authors will be given a new question to answer which will lend additional insight into their story and writing process. Do you have a question you'd like to see the authors answer? Tweet it to @aNextAuthor!

Q:
What is the best writing advice you've ever heard?
A:
Write! Just sit down and write and see what comes out. Allow your imagination to guide you. That's how Charlotte was born.
Q:
When you start a new story do you prepare an outline in advance or do you just jump right in?
A:
I don't prepare an outline at the beginning. After a while I will map it all out to make sure it makes sense to the reader.
Q:
How do you deal with writing criticism, apart from just ignoring it?
A:
I enjoy criticism from other writers and readers. Writing is stylistic and individualized but it's important to get constructive criticism to improve. I have learned a lot so far from this competition.
Q:
America's Next Author has been running for almost 8 weeks. If you could re-submit now, would you change anything about your story?
A:
That's a great question...I like to switch 1st to 3rd person in my novel...but you can do that with chapters and it's easier for the reader. For sure I'd change the ending. Feedback has been wonderful.

Loved the story and the development of the characters. If I could offer one criticism, it's the ending. It was too abrupt, and the last line was kind of corny. I felt it needed more. Other than that, I loved it!

This was an interesting read and kept me entertained partly because I too have a degree in psych and DID (or the better known multiple personality disorder) is one of my favorite topics to read about. There were just a few grammatical errors and places where you needed commas. One thing that confused me a little was the switching from third-person to first-person point of view. Aside from that, I enjoyed this story a lot, especially the end with the brother. Very good!

dark, but engaging subject and filled with emotion. Enjoyed the read. I could see this as a book that allowed for deeper character development and background. Great work.

Lori-your characters are well developed, the descriptions are rich...more than once I felt goosebumps because I could imagine so vividly from your choice of metaphors. The background was excellent, you chose the pertinent information wisely to share with your readers for this short story. Loved the whole thing, except for the very end was a bit of a cliche type line of "Go to bitch"...I just feel something more original could have been used and really added to some additional pondering to open for discussion and interpretation. Otherwise fantastic girl! Keep it up!

Wow, I have a lot of thoughts about this story. In most ways, I LOVE it. It reminds me a lot of one of my favorite shows, The United States of Tara, only much darker. The characters are well-developed and the plot is very imaginative and engaging. The writing style is great, and I love the intricacies of character interaction here. As far as grammar, punctuation, spelling, and sentence structure go, this is one of the strongest entries I've seen in this competition. Unfortunately, there are a couple of issues. The storytelling isn't quite as tight in the last third as it is in the beginning, and the perspective at the beginning and the end is third-person, while it is third-person in the middle. While this may be in effort to differentiate the timeline, that isn't quite clear. The conclusion is extremely abrupt, but that may be a stylistic choice. Overall a great read, it could just use some polish.

This reads like reportage, which is not a bad thing when you are telling this kind of story. It gives the reader some distance from the horrors of humanity that are its subject matter. I wasn't sure who the narrative voice was coming from, but I chose to believe it was Charlotte whose empathy came through even as she was robbed of her dignity. I think it's important to remember that a short story is what it is, it's a world unto itself. And this story did create it's own world.
