Samuel R. Delany is best known for his award winning writing and his contributions to the science fiction and fantasy genre. He has won four Nebula Awards, one Hugo Award, and one Stonewall Book Award. He has been inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame for having won the Nebula award.
Aside from his writing, Delaney is also a prominent professor of writing. He has been a professor of comparative literature at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, a professor of English at SUNY Buffalo, and since 2001 he has been a professor of creative writing and English at Temple University in Philadelphia. He also holds a graduate program on creative writing where he is the director.
Delany has written an erotic book called Hogg, which for a long time was considered too pornographic to be published. He is cited for saying that he takes his inspiration from personal experience and by examining of the working-class men, both gay and straight.
Delany was born in New York City and takes much of his inspiration and settings from the city. He has published several criticisms and essays in a non-fiction book entitled, Times Square Red, Times Square Blue.
