Sharon Straw

I am a casual writer who has always written in a just for fun manner. Now I am ready to think more seriously about my writing. I have entered and won many essay contests from 1999 to 2012. I enjoy writing and this is my first short story attempt! I also enjoy traveling and writing about places that I've traveled to. Lying under the coconut palms on the beach and letting my mind wander about topics to write about is a favorite thing to do while soaking up some sun! I also love animals and enjoy writing about them. In the past, I have suffered the loss of a dog who was my heart, and it actually helped me bring out some of the feelings of Hillary in this story.

I really enjoyed your story. I am exactly the opposite of the woman in your story. I would have leaned up against the wall to hear the music (maybe not at 3 am). You really kept me interested. If you have the time please read my story, 'Drift Away' and leave a review to let me know if you like it.

I love how the story flows and I can really get into the characters and feel the cold, the snow, the wetness and chill. Very good read!

Reading this left me wanting more. I think you should consider this author as one of the wild cards in this competition. She is not getting enough credit for her work, which I believe is exceptional!

This story takes me back to my college days of moving from apartment to apartment and from town to town. So I really enjoyed reading the story!!

As I started reading this story, I could feel the chilly dampness of the snowy weather and the writer's cold feet in her boots. It kept my attention and did draw me into the story. Very good.

Awesome short story, especially for a first from Sharon. She should continue to write. Don't stop here, go after your dreams. You have obviously been wanting to do this for a long time, and it shows.

When I read this story, I found myself there, in the snow, feeling the dampness. I found myself brokenhearted searching for the dog. I wish that the author could have written many more chapters as I feel the story could go on for quite a while! Very enjoyable!

This story has some strong thematic elements: the loss of a beloved pet, the uncertain of starting a new life in the country, the fumbling beginnings of a new romance. Still, I was put off by the narrator/protagonist's use of profanity in the story. It didn't match my expectations for the character.

This was a fast read, but I think it was too short. The protaganist was under developed and unsympathetic. The cowboy neighbor seemed like a bit player until the end. I think the charachter could be more developed if the story was longer, but unfortunately, the author was hampered by the imposed length in this contest.

I liked this story. Your story is very descriptive and made me feel the chill and the heartbreak when she lost the dog.

Unfortunately, I found the plot and the descriptions very stereotypical. The guitar going "twang" the name "Dusty" and him finding the dog...it was just too contrived.
