Thich Nhat Hanh is a Vietnamese Buddhist monk known for his peace activism and writing. Born in 1926, he entered the monastery when he was 16. He graduated from the Bao Quoc Buddhist Academy in Central Vietnam and was ordained a monk in 1949.
Nhat Hanh became the editor in chief of Vietnamese Buddhism in 1956 before going to the United States in 1960. There, he studied comparative religion at Princeton University, going on to lecture in Buddhism at Columbia University. Upon returning to Vietnam in 1963, he taught Buddhist psychology and literature at the Van Hanh Buddhist University.
During the Vietnam War, Nhat Hanh became an outspoken activist for peace, working around the world as part of the Buddhist Peace Delegation. He also published a 1967 book about his native country, Vietnam: Lotus in a sea of fire. Fragrant Palm Leaves, a volume of his journals from 1962 to 1966, was published in 1999. At the war’s end in 1973, he was denied permission to return to Vietnam, and would only be allowed to visit in 2005.
Nhat Hahn has written over 100 books, including poetry, stories, and Buddhist guides. Many of his books focus on mindfulness, including The Miracle of Mindfulness, published in 1991, Touching Peace: Practicing the Art of Mindful Living, from 1992, and Savor: Mindful Eating, Mindful Live, published in 2010. His 2001 book, A Pebble in Your Pocket, is a collection of stories for children and adults.
Nhat Hahn continues to write, and works in the Dordogne in France at Plum Village Buddhist Center, which he co-founded in 1982.
