eBook Summary

The Riddle of Ermenonville is a historical detective novel about the young Robespierre, a student of Sorbonne at that time.

Maximilien Robespierre, an eminent figure of the Great French revolution, is usually represented as a gloomy, embittered, bloodthirsty tyrant - a malicious genius of the revolution. That is totally inaccurate! He was a nice, sociable, amorous man.

Maximilien Robespierre arrives in a small borough of Ermenonville to spend his vacation there. However, he doesn't get a chance to have a rest. Henri, his fellow traveler, is murdered. Then Maximilien learns that there's also imminent danger to the life of the great philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau. The young man tries to avert his death.

Falling in love with Madeleine, a young girl of noble birth, brings him a lot of emotional experience.

Maximilien Marie Isidore de Robespierre

Image of Robespierre as Modern Man

Maximilien Marie Isidore de Robespierre was born in Arras, May 6, 1758.

On July 31, 1780, he became Bachelor of Law, in 1781, he received his license and was admitted to practice. He established his legal practice in Arras. He was a very good barrister, he won many cases. In 1783 Robespierre was appointed judge. He was both a judge and a barrister.

During that time, he began to consider more seriously the ways in which society might be reformed through laws.

He began to preach about patriotism. At first, he had no particular desire to overthrow the King, or set up a revolutionary government.

He was elected to the Estates-General in 1789 by Artois. He attached himself to the extreme left wing, and soon commanded attention. His influence grew daily, and the mob frantically admired him.

He was the "incorruptible" leader. He set up a political patriot party called The Jacobin club. He was the leader in the Paris Commune, the Convention and the Committee of Public Safety.

There were many political parties at that time. Distinction of political views resulted in collision. The fight was severe. Robespierre was the winner. Robespierre did not want death of his opponents, but the furious crowd demanded punishment of enemies of the revolution.

Many researchers consider Robespierre to be responsible for the Terror. They are mistaken! The terror was a coincidence of circumstances! The terror took place beyond control of Robespierre. The enemies of Robespierre decided to take advantage of the circumstances. They accused Robespierre of the organization of the terror.

On July 28, 1794, Robespierre and his colleagues were executed.
