Dave Hathaway is the unlikely hero of The Moonless Sea, an overweight travelling horse-shoe salesman whose life on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast is well and truly stalled until the day he and his wife Lyn stumble on an ancient alien artefact in their local shopping centre.
The contact between Dave and the alien construct triggers a dormant genetic response. Consequently he finds he is able to see the auras of electrical energy that surround all living things and in time Dave develops even greater use of his new ability. His mental outlook improves but he finds things may not be so wonderful as he becomes involved with a group who are hunting the aliens, they call them miroceles. It will take all his wits and developing talents to stay alive and ahead of the strange leader of the group, an ex-MI6 operative called David Welyton, otherwise known as Decco.
Hathaway is persuaded by Welyton to travel with them to their base, a mysterious island in a parallel Earth dimension off the North Queensland coast, but soon finds himself running for his life as Welyton shows his true colours and decides he needs no further help from the big man. Dave escapes into the alien jungle and joins up with another island exile, Lachie Lewis, an 82 year old Scottish ex-member of Welyton’s team, also on the run.
Days turn into weeks and Dave decides he has to do something to get back to Lyn in Nambour and encourages Lachie’s support. To go home they must steal an assembler to create diesel to fuel the boat the original team used to find the island. In stealing the assembler they are nearly killed by Decco but Dave turns the tables and escapes again with the assembler and one of the miroceles. What Hathaway does then becomes pivotal in the developing conflict that involves Welyton’s specialist group and military forces from Britain, the USA, Korea and China who all want the super technology the miroceles contain.
Before leaving the island Dave communicates with the mirocele, something none of the specialists have attempted to date, and realises there are great things to be done with the alien machines with ramifications for the future of humanity.
With the arrival of the British contingent led by a Major Manuel Rita, Decco flees back to Queensland and Dave Hathaway follows and begins a mad dash down the coast to keep the rogue agent away from Lyn, who Decco sees as the key to forcing Hathaway’s cooperation. Decco is a desperate man who sees his vision of world domination slipping from his grasp with Hathaway’s increasing strength and developing knowledge. With the aid of a young doctor from the Sunshine Coast, Josh Rielly, and Hathaway’s old school friend, Sergeant Billy Burton, Dave and Lyn slip under Weltyon’s dragnet of agents and underworld hirelings to head back north, to the island, where the final battle will be concluded.
