Adversity's Sweet Milk is a collection of three fictional tales that range widely in their scope and intentions, blending uneasy humor with the brashness of reality. The author, Fred Gilliard, energetically and dramatically brings to life characters, situations and ideas pertinent to today's world. In "Below the Fruited Plain" he portrays a young boy's struggle with a growing recognition of the pitfalls of a blue collar environment. His second story, "Unhallowed Ground," depicting racial conflict in the military turns, ultimately and ironically, not on a Black man's reaction to bias but on a young white Marine's response. The last tale, "Tears Along the Little Big Horn", considerably longer than the previous two, is set on Montana's Crow Indian Reservation, near the former Custer Battlefield, and is a creative endeavor that presents the challenges of living and teaching there during a year when the boys' basketball team from Lodge Grass High School strives to win the state championship. Adversity's Sweet Milk is a truly enjoyable reading experience. It is neither judgmental nor sentimental in the telling of the tales, but, instead, relies on an honest presentation to hold its readers.
