A Minefield Subject
Alice is really growing up, and turning 16 she hits that busy, awkward time of adolescence where there are so many pressures: doing well at school, learning to drive, friendships, family relationships, and not to mention boys. Understand from this that Alice on Her Way is a mature book for teens. It deals with subjects that adults would like to consider as adult topics, but are actually widely discussed among teenagers. Reading this book is not likely to teach a 14 year old anything they haven't heard before at school, or read about in a magazine. Parents should not shy away from this as it is realistic and if you think your teen doesn't know/ think/ feel anything about then think again. Let them read this book, see that Alice, another typical teen, has just the same struggles, and let them follow her example as she manages trying relationships and navigates growing up. Parents may be wary but if managed properly it can be used as a way in to talking, parent to child, about these important themes.
