UN Exposed

Disheartened is the word I would use to describe how I felt after reading this. I am probably as naive as Soussan was when he embarked on his graduate career, but I hoped the UN funtioned on the basis of having the power to do good (yes, I can hear some of you laughing as I type). What I learned, though, is that the UN is as open to corruption and political climbing as any other institution, but perhaps all the more dangerous and disturbing because of the sway it has. It was a real eye-opener and I am glad I have read it - if anything I am now better aquainted with the world of politics and the negotiations that happen within. I have a certain admiration for Soussan and his whistle-blowing book. It takes a lot of courage to dream of making a difference, work to that end and then face the fact that corruption and backstabbing lies every which way before you. It is an interesting book spiked with humour which makes it particularly enjoyable to read.
