Set in modern-day Nigeria, Crowther Ward is the true life story of Ben Ogwo, a three-hundred level economics undergraduate, who found himself in Crowther Ward following a road traffic accident caused by a trigger-happy policeman. Every year, Ben Ogwo celebrates his birthday with his family at Aba. The afternoon of March 7 was no exception as he boarded the usual fourteen-seater commercial transportation he hated so much. Being an only child raised in poverty, he was under no illusions that the gateway to prosperity was through hard work, and so he had taken his studies seriously, despite the numerous temptations prevalent in his nation's educational system. He wanted a life that was larger than life itself, but was heartbroken, as he saw his life crash as a consequence of being an inmate in Crowther Ward. It is also a story about a resident doctor's determination to keep his patient alive despite all odds, in an environment that opposed it, and whose life took a different turn as a result of it. Crowther Ward also exposes the rudimentary medical practice in Nigeria, the misery of being an inmate in the ward, and the deficiencies, apathy, and rancor that characterise the health sector and its major players.
