INTRODUCTION
It may put some readers off if I confess that this novella is based on a view of the future which comes from the pages of the Bible. In particular it is based on some parts of the books of Daniel and Revelation. I make no apology for that. For those who dare to pick it up they may find it accords effectively with their own gloomy visions for the future of the E.U. and the world. If this is true then I may expect, in the not too distant future, that the author and the publishers will be arrested by the Gestapo and carried off to the prison camp. I hope I shall meet there with many of the readers of what I have to offer concerning this chilling vision. It is not all gloom however; there is a happy ending, though not for all the characters in the book. I have used the traditional SS ranks. The attempts to dispose of dead bodies was a problem for the Nazi extermination camps of that era. The idea of gassing was thought up by Adolf Eichman of everlasting ignominy and contempt. Many bodies were put into pits or disposed of in other ways. This was true, as far as I know, of Chelmo, Treblinka, Sobibor and other death camps as well as Auschwitz- Birkenau which besides being a death camp had a complex of camps for prisoners of war, Russian and Polish prisoners, Gypsies, criminals and political prisoners, as well as Jews who were not to be killed but used as bargaining counters with the allies. Lawrence Rees’s book on Auschwitz was a valuable source as was Other Men’s Graves, supposedly the diary of an SS junior officer. This was particularly useful for giving insights into the SS military life, for their ranks and for their state of mind. The camp hierarchy is different in my visions of the future as is the organisation of the lower orders of prisoners working at the sharp end of the death process, as it were, and of the SS who supervised them. That change was just my own and not necessarily how the future might be. Indeed the future might be quite unlike what I have imagined. Only the last chapter is an end for all those who give over their minds to the juggernaut of the new Nazism. It is also a beginning for those who really remain “true, or loyal, unto death” to a far nobler ideal and a far better Lord than any of this world’s ideals and the leaders who profess them have ever proved to be. Certainly far better than the squalid, mercenary rise of European Unity. It is as much unity as two cats tied together by their tails. That is being joined without being united. In this my fictional story or future fantasy, I present a picture of despair for the outcome of European unity. Indeed I do not think this empire controlled by politics and religion, by pseudo democracy and by tyranny can ever work. We see it in its young and formative years at the present time. I have painted a picture with words of its great crisis which leads on to a seven year rule of a godman who seems, by that time, to have solved all the world’s problems including the economic and racial ones. More importantly he will have appeared to have solved the problem of Israel and the Islamic nations. Multitudes, bemused and bewildered by the manufactured adulation of entertainers and clowns will marvel at this person and bow before him because, like Hitler or Stalin, he seems to have taken all power and all authority into his hands. Just where the USA and Russia come into this I have not specified. It would not surprise me if they did not fade out of the scene altogether and only play bit parts in the unfolding of this particular drama. The problem of militant Islam I think may well be solved, possibly after a series of conflicts where reasonable Islam joins with Christendom to form an alliance by which the future god-man leader extends his rule and the rule of his empire across the Middle East to Pakistan, India and to Southeast Asia. It is at this point that I need to point out that the influence of the old Roman Empire is still with us and is growing in power in human minds. It is found in its successor which calls itself the Roman Catholic Church. This too is growing in authority which has come about through the decline of Christianity in Britain and the English speaking world. It now puts itself at the head of denominational Christendom and claims to be the only true church. Its authority is increasing, will go on increasing and may end up by becoming, as in Rome of old, a pantheon of gods, goddesses and beliefs. Clearly evangelical Christianity, which is increasing in the Third World, will not be popular with any closed mind system. It is persecuted by closed mind Hinduism, by closed mind Islam and by closed minded exponents of scientism. Christianity has been the base of freedom and reform in Britain since Wycliffe first gave England its own translation of the Bible. The Judeo Christian ethic has given Britain a prominent, probably a uniquely prominent, place in the history of enlightenment and reform. Sadly this has been thrown away by the people who hate freedom, who hate God and who despise the common people through whom all these movements have arisen. The attitude of the closed mind is filling the world. Authoritarianism is everywhere, as moral conditions become more anarchic so the measures taken by governments become more oppressive. Post Modern relativism means that governments or pressure groups can make and unmake the rules of morality and of living as their every whim dictates. Let me finish this Introduction with a passage from the Book of Daniel. “But the people that do know their God shall be strong and do exploits. And they that understand among the people shall instruct many, yet they shall fall by the sword, and by flame, by captivity, and by spoil, many days….And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people and there shall be a time of trouble such as never was since there was a nation….And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life and some to shame and everlasting contempt.”
