The South commissioned 296 Brigadier Generals throughout the Civil War, no less than 67 commanders gave their lives in the momentous conflict with the North. Fated Stars III concludes a three-part series. The origianl Fated Stars focused on native born Virginian brigadiers and was followed by Fated Stars II which expanded the study to include those brigadiers from the remaining Confederate States from the period 1861-1862.
Unlike contemporary general of like rank, those of the American Civil War personally brought their troops into battle, leading by example. Such heroics were destined to produce an uncommonly high percentage of combat wounds, illnesses and death as a direct result of their inspiring leadership.
