Girl Unmoored

This is a sweet story that sees Apron change from a girl pre-occupied by dramas in her own universe to one who is far more attentive of others; she is able to see them heading for the rocks and wants to guide them back to calmer waters. Jennifer Gooch Hummer's writing is brilliant. She manages to create a cast of characters so real you can almost touch them and directs them in such a way that she taps into every emotion and leaves you feeling wrung out. Apron's understanding of the world around her made me smile: sometimes she knows so much for her age, and at other times she has so much still to learn. It is a tear-jerker in places, but it will also make you laugh out loud. This is a very original piece of writing. Difficult to know how to pin-point it, but saying that it can't be pigeon-holed can only be a compliment.
