Can you think of anything nicer than preparing a meal from produce grown in your own garden? Whether you own a window box or a meadow, every outdoor space can yield a fine crop of fruit or vegetables. Plant some delicious cut-and-come again salads in a window box, plan a 'square foot' garden on a four-foot square plot, or use your flowerbed to grow decorative vegetables and flowers together. Growing your own food doesn't have to be time-consuming or expensive. A few packets of seeds and some basic tools - a spade, fork, hoe, rake, trowel and watering can - will provide you with all you need to fill a plot with vegetables. Whatever you choose to grow you'll find nothing beats the satisfaction of serving up a home-cooked, home-grown meal to family or friends. Good luck and happy digging.

A place to start

If you are looking for a fairly broad overview on growing your own food, then this book will do that. It provides reasonable and reliable information but not so much in the area I am interested in. I only have a very small garden with a long slim patch allocated to growing my own veg along one fence. I have grown potatoes and courgettes, and lettuce and herbs for fun with the kids but want to be a bit more productive now. This book didn't give me the information to do that, as I need pointers on how to maximise on a small space: what to plant and when and what type of rotations to make. Also it was a bit slim on information about container planting. In this day and age with self-sufficiency being a buzz word, and everyone being encouraged to eat more healthily, I would have thought there would be more emphasis on planting in a small family garden.
