I love a book that starts with a map; my only reservation is that Henderson could have made the map grungier, more fitting with the music of its contents. He could have warped it, coloured it black, green and burnt it for the effect.Grunge is significant, he tells us, because all of the other (arguable) top five most significant things to come out of Seattle (Starbucks, Boeing, Microsoft, Amazon) are massive corporations, and grunge is a pop rock movement. The text proceeds like a tour guide, corresponding to the aforementioned maps, and it pages and pages until we get any grunge. But when we do, it appears in abundance, like the rain. Brilliantly and personally conceived, this book tells a story which requires telling, stamping Seattle and grunge as synonymous.
