My father passed away leaving my mother with eight children. The ages ranged from eighteen down to one and one-half. We were left on a rented farm. Our mother had very little knowledge on what to do on a farm - crop wise. I was number seven, number five of boys. All boys were thirteen years old down to me of four years old. I didn't get very much attention, especially food. All my brothers left home and enlisted in the Navy or Army at the early ages of fifteen or sixteen years. During W.W.II the military didn't care about the ages. That left me to farm at twelve years old. I would get up before daylight, hitch the mules to equipment, and work until time for the school bus. It was hard and tough and enjoyable to live in the country. We moved to town when I was fourteen. My life was now like an ant, first one way, then the other. By approaching middle age, I found my way. I had become a Nuclear Engineer and then a Trident Missile Engineer. There were deep bumps in my life, but an enjoyable life was the bottom line. I too dropped out of school and enlisted in the Marines at the age of seventeen.
