Valuable, hidden insights

Thurman was at the heart of the Harlem renaissance so his novel verges, effectively, on the borders of being historical document as well as entertainment. There are a lot of characters to keep pace with but, once mastered, they provide a range of perspectives. It is a bit clumsy to manage but it spares the reader and the author suffering sterotyped characters rolled together in a package. As the protagonist is not such a cunning cover-up for Thurman himself, and so taking this on as a form of autobiography, however diluted, we know we are among real people and real events. Read it as a novel and enjoy it, or read it as a rare account of an important time and learn something you never knew before.
