Lady Chatterly's Lover

One of the most infamous books of all time, subject in the 1960's to an obscenity trial because of the use of explicit sexual language and scenery, the book was ultimately judged to have enough literary merit to be available to the public. Naturally the sexual relationship between the aristocratic Lady Chatterly and the lower class game keeper is the scene depicting this. Sexuality, however is only part of the exploration of relationships in the book. Lawrence seeks to find some kind of wholeness from the different facets of love he portrays; a cohesion of mind, body spirit rather than just pure intellect or pure animal passions. There is also the theme of class divisions and boundaries which are obviously overcome by the affair. These themes and the way it is written make for a very brave and revolutionary book for its time. Definitely a must read but a little too much penis-worship for my liking!
