Propelled by a sense of skeptical wonder, the poems in Philip Pardi's first collection explore the nuances of faith and resistance in a world where "falling is the given." Present at every turn are people making meaning and sense in an elusive world: a doorman who plans to punch the senator who never speaks to him, a father who must constantly check that his baby is still breathing, a commuter who pauses to pray and immediately hears the ding of a bell from across town. It is a world where angels get headaches upon their return to Earth, where God is forgetful, and where a squirrel will steal your M&Ms if you fall asleep in the grass. These poems embody a patient but restless engagement with the world, a world where there are "so many ways to avoid the central fact" but where, time and again, the reasons for disbelief become precisely the reasons for belief. But this is also a book of resistance. While these are poems of witness to the turmoil of both body and soul, witnessing is merely the first step. As the poet writes to his son in the long poem that concludes the collection, "we ought to know what a witness must do." These are poems about how to live.
