The Parisian Jazz Chronicles "offers an engaging personal account of the jazz scene in Paris in the 1980s and 1990s. Zwerin writes lovingly but unsparingly about figures he knew and interviewed-- such as Dexter Gordon, Freddy Heineken, Miles Davis, Bob Dylan, Chet Baker, Wayne Shorter, and Melvin Van Peebles. Against this background, Zwerin tells about his own life--split allegiances to journalism and music, and to America and France, his solitary battle for sobriety, a failing marriage, and fatherhood.

Parisian Jazz Chronicles

Had it not been included in the title, ine would still get the impression this book was of the same improvisational nature as the musical period it portrays. From the off we are led through a series of brief encounters with Miles Davis, Freddie Heineken, Wayne Shorter and more great players, many of whom Zwerin knew personally. And this is also a very personal book, detailing points in the author’s musical/journalistic co-existence which have left scars and smiles. Scatty, but good fun and illuminating.
