Red and Hot

Touching on the great literature which Russia has spawned (rather more obviously ‘great’ than the jazz it has given birth to) Starr references many a text and puts jazz in the context of the folk music into which it perhaps more readily fits here than other nations – in alignment with the politics and harsh experiences of the time. The author’s recapturing of those fraught histories, made easier with music, are both painful and hilarious in equal measure.
