Signs

Signs really is a unique book. The way it is written strips the story of its usual trappings that can lead to sterotype and cliche. Instead it is just the bare bones of a break-up, and the result is an emotional wrangle expressed through stream of consciousness of which James Joyce could be proud. I thought this was a really clever technique of the author to do it this way, as it means that the reader can use their own experiences to empathise and possibly, narcissistically, cast themselves in the starring role. The story, of course, has a plot but it is so charged that it becomes more a story of 'experiencing' rather than 'happening'.
