I cannot sing the praises of this book enough. My Mum had tried giving up smoking a few times and managed it for a couple of short spells, but always took it up again. She had smoked for 35 years when she read this book, and never looked back! It is now 8 years since she has had a cigarette. She loved this book to the point of evangelism, so when my husband wanted to stop smoking, she told him to get this - it worked for him too: he hasn't smoked in 3 years. They tell me that this book really worked for them as Allen Carr tells you to continue smoking as you read the book. He really analyses the hold that cigarettes have over the smoker, and he gradually unpicks the psychology behind it until you realise that you don't need or even want to smoke anymore. I think the idea is that by the time you finish reading the book, you are ready to stop and really want to make that change. Allen Carr was also a huge smoker for years, and the fact that he managed to kick the habit was a huge source of encouragement for both my mum and my husband. I nagged them both for so long as you do when you want a loved one to give up smoking. I knew they would only do it when they were ready, and I am just so relieved they found this book. The way I see it, I will have two of the most important people in my life, in my life for even longer.
