In The Lost Years, Mary Higgins Clark, America's Queen of Suspense, has written her most astonishing novel to date. At its center is a discovery that, if authenticated, may be the most revered document in human history-"the holiest of the holy"—and certainly the most coveted and valuable object in the world. Biblical scholar Jonathan Lyons believes he has found the rarest of parchments-a letter that may have been written by Jesus Christ. Stolen from the Vatican Library in the 1500s, the letter was assumed to be lost forever. Now, under the promise of secrecy, Jonathan is able to confirm his findings with several other experts. But he also confides in a family friend his suspicion that someone he once trusted wants to sell the parchment and cash in. Within days Jonathan is found shot to death in his study. At the same time, his wife, Kathleen, who is suffering from Alzheimer's, is found hiding in the study closet, incoherent and clutching the murder weapon. Even in her dementia, Kathleen has known that her husband was carrying on a long-term affair. Did Kathleen kill her husband in a jealous rage, as the police contend? Or is his death tied to the larger question: Who has possession of the priceless parchment that has now gone missing? It is up to their daughter, twenty-eight-year-old Mariah, to clear her mother of murder charges and unravel the real mystery behind her father's death. Mary Higgins Clark's The Lost Years is at once a breathless murder mystery and a hunt for what may be the most precious religious and archaeological treasure of all time.

Suspenseful

Mary Higgins Clark is a respected bestselling author. In her new book "The Lost Years", the story is centered around the discovery of a rare parchment that a biblical scholar believes to be a letter written by Jesus to Joseph of Arimathea. The letter was assumed lost after it was stolen from the Vatican Library in the 1500s. The scholar, Jonathan, confirms that the letter is real and within days is shot in his study. His wife is found in the closet holding the murder weapon, but she's not the only suspect. This book had guessing until the very end. In many murder mystery novels it's easy to guess who the killer was, but not in this one. It's good writing and I enjoyed the Biblical factor of the story. However, I did wonder whether all of the facts were accurate. For example, I always thought that most people of Jesus's time didn't read or write. Even so, it's a good read with realistic characters and full of suspense.

I want the next one, now!

Oh this novel just has it all! Each time I sat down to read it I struggled to break off to do anything else. I have bags under my eyes from staying up late to read this!! Mary Higgins Clark gives us a consuming biblical mystery with jealousy, infidelity, suspicion, murder, suffering and retribution abound. There is so much going on in the story that you can't get bored. When Dr. Jonathan Lyons uncovers a lost ancient document that may have been written by Jesus himself he seeks the opinion of his colleagues, and reveals the precious document to a close friend. Jonathan is then found shot dead in his study - was one of his confidants the killer? Or did his wife find out about his affair and murder him during one of her lucid moments? There is enough controversy to keep you constantly guessing here. I also liked the sensitivity of the writing and Mary Higgins Clark's treatment of Alzheimers through Jonathan's wife. It provides a very tender aspect to the story from the very beginning and builds up some of the internal conflict of Mariah. She wants to prove her parents' innocence but she also has her feelings of resentment toward her father, for his infidelity, to deal with. As the reader you can understand Mariah's hurt, but you can't deny her father's right to be loved when the woman he loves and married is an ever receding shadow within the person that Alzheimers is leaving behind. It is a gripping and an emotional book, and I recommend it highly.
