Carolina Perales is vacationing in Miami with her two children one summer, but is also there to do a favor for long-time family friend, Aroldo Rodriguez, who is having his son, Jorge Rodriguez, smuggled in from Cuba. She is to bring him back to Connecticut with her. Meanwhile, in Sagua La Chica, a tiny village in Cuba, Gonzalo Sevilla is having a cup of coffee in a local cafe when he overhears a conversation between Jorge Rodriguez and a woman: Jorge has no intentions of leaving. Gonzalo, who has recently broken off his engagement after finding out his fiancÈ was cheating on him, decides that if Jorge Rodriguez is not on that boat, he certainly will be. Carolina picks up Gonzalo Sevilla in Miami, mistakenly believing that he is Aroldo's son. By the time she learns the truth of who he is, she has already begun to fall in love with him. But one thing leads to another, and sensing that Gonzalo is sincere and means well, she agrees to take him back to Connecticut so that he can begin his new life. Neither one trusts the other, but one encounter at a time, Carolina begins to see another side to Gonzalo, and he also begins to wonder if Carolina is the one woman who can teach him to trust again. They are falling in love with one another, but both are stubbornly reluctant to admitting this, seeing it as a sign of weakness. But as they draw nearer to confessing their love, Gonzalo's ex-fiance arrives from Cuba and wants a reconciliation. She tries to lure Gonzalo by telling him they will lead an affluent life at her uncle's estate in West Palm Beach, Florida. Carolina thinks she has lost Gonzalo to the voluptuous Candita forever. But Gonzalo doesn't falter in the least. And when Carolina sees all that Gonzalo is willing to give up for her, she knows she can trust him with her heart. Carolina learns that when love is meant to be, it conquers all the odds. And Gonzalo has not only learned to trust again, he has found his true, life-long flame.
