Utilizing a highly original writing technique, Michael Natter has revitalized the novella with a work that goes far beyond the usual psychoanalytical/sociopolitical work of fiction. One that invites the reader to explore sexuality, false idols, death and mental illness through the mind of a young man whose existence has become saturated by the myriad of events, overheard words, and cinematic viewings, that push his already unstable mind hard and unto the pavement. This young man's name is Samson, and he avoids his mirror as much as he takes comfort in it. After a brief introduction to him via his childhood logic, the reader is given the ability to examine his life; a life led similarly to that of most upper-middle class Americans-one with a psychiatrist, a prescription for mood stabilizers, and a brand of cigarettes that he feels is superior to his mother's. However, when tensions begin to rise within his domestic life, Samson is suddenly placed within a hotel that serves as a waiting room for his eventual stay with his grandparents. It is there that his subconscious begins to meld with reality as he spirals toward a violent and hallucinatory climax. The stories that follow reveal the fantasies held within The Still of the Curtain.
