This epic novel takes place in southern Arizona in the year 1866. The Civil War has just ended and ruthless men roam about the territory with impunity. Four such men learn of a large communal farm that does not bank the cash they receive from selling their crops. They come looking for hidden money and easy victims for they know the religious clan has no weapons of defense and wouldn't use them if they had them. A twenty year old boy, Matthew Hamilton, stands against guns with a farm tool and is shot. His future bride, Beth Olsen, is carried into an empty cabin and barely survives the ravages inflicted on her. There can be no wedding now for it is the law of the commune that a soiled woman can not marry. Matthew is the hunter for the clan, and supplies all the wild meat for the farm with a twenty year old flintlock. He survives and goes in search of a better gun-and the four who damaged the young girl who was picked by the commune to be his bride. Months later, hardened by their separate adventures, Beth and Matthew meet again. They team up and go together in search of the four men who changed their lives forever.
