In 1862, during the second year of the Civil War, Russell H. Conwell, then a student in his first weeks at Yale College, answered his country's call and enlisted in "Lincoln's Army." Although not yet 20, he was commissioned a captain, serving until 1864. When he returned to civilian life, he studied law in the office of his former colonel, then earned his degree at Albany Law School and became a licensed lawyer. A soldier, preacher, writer, orator, educator, and friend of mankind, Mr. Conwell was the founder of Temple University, a university of unparalleled excellence. We pesent his greatest legacy to the human race, "Acres of Diamonds". We hope you will find and cultivate YOUR diamonds. |

| Yet Conwell did not get readily into his life- work. He might have seemed almost a failure until he was well on toward forty, for although he kept making successes they were not permanent successes, and he did not settle himself into a definite line. He restlessly went westward to make his home, and then restlessly returned to the East. After the war was over he was a lawyer, he was a lecturer, he was an editor, he went around the world as a correspondent, he wrote books. He kept making money, and kept losing it. |
