| It is not true there is no common interest in such an organization between governed and governors. The authorities in command must make some appeal to the native activities of the subjects, must call some of their powers into play. Talleyrand said that a government could do everything with bayonets except sit on them. This cynical declaration is at least a recognition that the bond of union is not merely one of coercive force. |

| Dewey's Democracy and Education had a profound influence on the American educational system and proves as relevant to the twenty-first century as it did when it was written. This work played a critical role in the development of progressive education and in it's time provided the theoretical foundation for the Progressive Education Association which was dedicated to the reform of the American school system. In the first half of the twentieth century it was progressive educators who championed standardized testing coupled with the recognition of the necessity to accommodate students' creative and artistic needs. Today these principles are fundamental to the pedagogical methods used in many alternative and charter schools which reject rote learning, instead emphasizing experiential learning as the most effective way to teach children. |
